WHERE IS THE COUNTRY CONCERNED? The state Darfur is located in Sudan, a country in southeastern Africa. Sudan is near Countries such as Chad, Lybia, Egypt, Ethiopia, and many others.

WHO ARE THE PARTICIPANTS? The Islamic controlled government, located in East Sudan, started the Genocide as an ethnic cleansing of the Darfur region in West Sudan. They "hire" militia groups known as the Janjaweed to attack villages, rape, kill and loot. The Janjaweed attacked the Darfur civilians. The United Nations says more than 2.7 million have fled their homes and now live in camps near Darfur's main towns.

WHAT REASONS ARE GIVEN FOR THE GENOCIDE? The conflicts about the marginalization of the area and the failure to protect sedentary people from attacks by nomads. Also the citizens didn’t like having nomads come around their town so they tried to get the government to react.

WHAT METHODS WERE USED TO KILL THE VICTIMS? The Sudanese forces and Janjaweed militia attacked hundreds of villages throughout Darfur, leaving villages completely destroyed and millions of civilians forced to flee their homes. African Farmers and others were being systematically displaced and murdered by the Janjaweed. Other than murder this also included rape, guns, explosions and other things to kill victims. It was pure torture.

HOW MANY PEOPLE WERE KILLED? This genocide in Darfur has killed 400,000 lives and banished over 2,500,000 people.

WHEN DID THIS OCCUR? The tension started in 1989 when General Omar Bashir took control of Sudan by military coup, which led to the National Islamic Front government to have regional tensions. In 2003 over 400 villages were destroyed and millions of people left their homes. The genocide kept going and killed thousands of people. In 2005 the international Criminal Court took the first step to end the genocide but the government of Sudan denied cooperating with the investigations. Darfur today is still suffering and the problem facing Sudan cannot be settled until there is peace in Darfur.

HOW DOES IT FIT THE DEFINITION OF THE GENOCIDE. There was two rebel movements that took up arms against the Sudanese governments. They were complaining about protecting the area from being attacked by nomads. The government reacted by unleashing Arab militias known as Janjaweed.

HOW DID THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY REACT? They ICC (International Criminal Court) had started investigation on human rights violations. The government of Sudan refused to cooperate with the investigations. Their president Omar Al Bashir, was the first to have an arrest warrant out for him. They had arrest warrants out for other leaders of the Janjaweed also. The Darfur citizens then went into hiding, they left Darfur and went to live on camps near Darfur's main towns.
