2. Sides and conflict (Bad)- The Sudanese Government and the Arab Militias known as the Janjaweed. The Janjaweed is funded by the government to carry out acts of violence against civilians and defend against the SLM and JEM. (Good)-The main rebel groups are the Sudanese Liberation movement(SLM), the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), and the United Nations-African Union mission (UNAMID). 5. Dates: (1956)- Sudan gains independence from Britain. (1955-1972)- First Sudanese civil war (1989)- Brigadier-General Omar Hassan Ahmad al- Bashir leads a military coup creating the oppressive Sudanese government. (2003)- Sudanese government starts recruiting local militias to assault African civilians and the genocide begins in Darfur. (2005-2006)-Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA) is negotiated. (2006)-President George W. Bush calls to double the amount of international troops in Darfur.

(2008)-United Nations-African Union mission (UNAMID) is sent to help maintain peace in Darfur. (2009-2010)-International Criminal Court issues a warrant for Sudanese president Omar Bashir’s arrest and for charges of genocide. (2010)-The Sudanese Government and the JEM sign a peace agreement.

8. End Result- The Sudanese Government and the JEM sign a peace agreement in 2010, but the Janjaweed continues to attack civilians and raid villages. There are also accusations against the Sudanese army for launching air raids against Darfur villages. The Janjaweed has moved into chad and begun to terrorize the people there as well.
