ADOLESCENCE  Stage of life between childhood and adulthood

Hormones  Hormones-chemical substances produces in certain glands that help regulate the way your body functions.  Helps your body prepare for adulthood

Glands Glands-group of cells or an organ that secretes hormones or other chemicals the body needs. Glands-group of cells or an organ that secretes hormones or other chemicals the body needs.

Endocrine System  Endocrine System-glands throughout the body that regulate body functions, providing hormones directly into the bloodstream.  Pituitary gland-base of brain, controls work of other glands and organs as well as regulates body’s growth and development.  Thyroid gland- along the trachea, regulates body growth and rate of metabolism.

Endocrine System  Parathyroid gland-regulates levels of calcium and phosphorous in the blood.  Adrenal gland-regulates the balance of salt and water in the body, controls the body’s response to emergencies and excitement. Located on top of the kidneys  Pancreas-controls level of sugar in the blood and provides the small intestine with enzymes to aid in digestion.

Endocrine System  Ovaries-female reproductive glands controlling sexual development and the maturing of eggs.  Testes-male reproductive glands controlling sexual development and the production of sperm.

Puberty  Puberty-the time when you develop certain physical characteristics of adults of your own gender.  Girls grow 2-8 in. taller between ages  Boys grow 4-12 in. taller between ages  After the initial growth spurt both genders often keep growing for several more years.  See 6.2

Mental Growth Develop more complex thinking skills. –Remember more info. for a longer time. –Learn to analyze and solve complicated problems. –Understand that not every question has a simple answer. –Rely on values to make decisions.

Mental Growth Begin to recognize that other people have point of view that may be different than yours. Realize that you have the power to make decisions that can affect your life. Recognize that your actions have consequences and take responsibility for those actions.

Emotional Growth o Start to move from parent approval to peer approval. o Start building friendships with or feeling attracted to the opposite sex.

Emotional Changes Adolescence brings on powerful emotions –Mood swings are a natural part of being a teen. –Mood swings are caused by the release of hormones, it’s a sign of emotional maturation.

Expressing Your Emotions Learning how to manage your emotions in a healthy way is another way you grow during adolescence.
