1 BELL WORK What changes have you gone through “physically, mental/emotionally, and socially” from elementary to jr. high?

2 REVIEW Define Health A combination of physical, mental/emotional, and social well-being Define Wellness A state of well-being, or total health What are the 3 sides of the health Triangle? Physical, Mental/Emotional, and Social. How can healthy habits affect wellness? Healthy habits allows you to have a balanced health triangle which promotes wellness.

3 MEET AND GREET When I ring the bell you are to meet someone new and ask them what they did this summer.

4 Understanding Your Health Changes during your teen years.

5 OBJECTIVES describe physical changes that occur during the teen years. identify the mental and emotional changes during the teen years explain how your relationships may change.

6 Adolescence Adolescence is a time of discovery. The object of discovery is you. adolescence The stage of life between childhood and adulthood.

7 You begin to ask the question who am I? You learn more about yourself and abilities. You meet new people and have new experiences. You gain greater independence and take on greater responsibility.

8 Physical Changes Growth spurts Change in body hair Change in body shape

9 Puberty The time when you start developing physical characteristics of adults of your gender. Physical changes that occur during adolescence are the result of puberty.

10 GIRLS Puberty usually begins between the ages of 8 and 14.

11 BOYS Puberty usually begins between the ages of 11 and 14.

12 The changes that occur during puberty are all related to the release of hormones. hormones Chemical substances, produced in glands, that help regulate many body functions. The changes that hormones cause can make some teens feel uncomfortable

13 MENTAL/EMOTIONAL CHANGES MENTAL You are able to face problems that are more complex. You can imagine the possible consequences of your actions. You begin to understand different points of view. You can see different solutions to a problem. You begin to develop your own values and beliefs. EMOTIONAL You experience mood swings caused by hormones. You begin to feel attraction toward others. You have an increased awareness in what is important to you. You become aware of the importance of assuming responsibility

14 SOCIAL CHANGES During adolescence, you are likely to experience changes in your relationships with family, peers, and the community.

15 FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS You are learning to act independently of your parents or other family members. You are learning to make decisions for yourself.

16 PEER RELATIONSHIPS Your friends and peers take on a greater importance. peers People in your age group Your friends become the most important thing.

17 RELATIONSHIPS WITH COMMUNITY During your teen years you will get more involved in community service. Community service Volunteer programs whose goal is to improve the community and the life of its residents
