Endocrine System 1. Endocrine system – system of glands throughout the body that regulate body functions. 2. Hormones – chemical substances produced in certain glands that help to regulate the way your body functions. 3. Metabolism – process by which the body gets energy from food.

Endocrine System 4. Parathyroid gland – regulate levels of calcium and phosphorous in the blood. Adrenal gland – relate balance of salt and water in body. Aids in digestion and control the body’s response to emergencies and excitement.

Endocrine System Ovaries (female) – female reproductive gland. Hormones produced in the ovaries control sexual development and the maturing of eggs. Pituitary gland – produces several hormones that control the work of other glands. Regulate the body’s growth and development.

Endocrine System Thyroid gland – regulates body growth and the rate of metabolism. Pancreas – controls the level of sugar in the blood and provides the small intestine with digestive chemicals called enzymes. Testes (male) – male reproductive glands. Hormone produced in testes controls sexual development and the production of sperm.

Type 1 diabetes Germ-fighting cells in the body attach the cells of the pancreas that produce insulin. Body doesn’t produce enough insulin, there is too much sugar. If not treated – can fall into a coma. Regularly inject themselves with insulin to keep blood sugar at right level.

Type 2 diabetes Produce a normal amount of insulin but body can’t use it well. Often develops in adulthood. More common in people who are overweight. People feel tired a lot and are often sick to their stomachs. People have to carefully control their diets and engage in regular physical activity.

Thyroid disease Metabolism can be affected.
Hypothyroidism – can’t make enough hormones to regulate metabolism. Person feels tired and cold, have dry skin, and gain extra weight. Can be treated with a thyroid replacement hormone.

Thyroid disease Hyperthyroidism – thyroid produces too many hormones.
Leads to very high metabolism. Can lead to sweating, excessive eating, weight loss, tremors, and muscle weakness. Can be treated with medication.
