2 Mental Development Develop more complex thinking skills.
Learn to analyze and solve complicated problems Come to understand that many questions do not have a simple right or wrong answer. Learn to rely on values to make responsible decisions. Adolescence is when you begin to recognize that other people have points of view different from your own. Recognize your actions have consequences It’s important to take responsibility for these consequences

3 Emotional Development
When you’re a child you want to win your parents’ approval. During adolescence the approval and acceptance of your peers also begins to matter. Begin to feel attracted to members of the opposite gender Teens grow and mature at different rates. This may affect personal health Teens who experience early growth may feel different and more mature than their peers. Those who experience later growth may be worried about looking younger than their peers. It is important to recognize and accept that body types and levels of maturity differ. Respect and appreciate these differences

4 Emotional Changes Adolescence brings on powerful emotions
Emotions may vary throughout this stage of life. May experience a confusing mix of emotions in a single day. Mood swings are a natural part of being a teen Caused by the release of hormones The fluctuations in your emotions are signs that you’re maturing emotionally Begin to understand others’ emotional needs better.

5 Expressing your Emotions
Learning how to manage and express strong feelings healthfully is another way in which you grow during adolescence Must express your emotions in a constructive and appropriate ways. Verbalize appropriately if you have a problem that is bothering you. Ex. parents, trusted adult, friend

6 Social Development As you progress through your teen years you will constantly be learning about yourself. Figuring out how to fit into society Discovering what makes you unique Sense of identity will develop, or alter. Values will have a strong influence Become part of new social groups Interest that you pursue will shape your identity This all shapes what type of adult you will be.

7 Quick Write: 11/6 What are the differences between a young child’s needs and a teen’s needs? How do you think those needs change during adulthood? Why? Write 5 emotions that you have experienced. Then answer the following for each one. Is this a feeling that needs to be controlled? Why or why not? What are some appropriate ways to express this feeling? What are some inappropriate expressions of this feeling? How can you avoid those inappropriate expressions? What kinds of conflicts may arise between you and your peers? How can you successfully resolve those conflicts?
