Early childhood – is from age 1 - 3 Middle childhood – is from age 3 – 5 Late childhood – is from

3 Adolescence Adolescence – the stage of development during which humans from grow childhood to adulthood Generally lasts from ages

4 Adolescence Growth is controlled by hormones
Hormones – A chemical that is made in one part of the body and causes a change in a different part of the body Sex Hormones – hormones that affect your reproductive system

5 Adolescence Types of hormones
Thyroxine – thyroid gland – controls how you body makes and uses energy Testosterone – testis – controls much of the growth and function of men’s bodies, produces sperm Estrogen – ovary – controls much of the growth and function of women’s bodies, causes the female body to release eggs Epinephrine – adrenal gland – makes your heart beat faster and prepares your body to fight or flee Human growth hormone – pituitary gland – causes your body to grow; causes height and weight growth spurts

6 Adolescence Puberty – stage of development in which the reproductive system becomes mature Girls – usually 9 – 16 Boys – usually Girls between the ages of 11 and 16 will usually grow an average of 12 inches and gain 40 pounds. Boys between the ages of 12 and 18 will usually grow an average of 16 inches and gain 60 pounds.

9 Mental and Emotional changes
Your ability to understand complex ideas increases. You begin to feel attracted to other people and become interested in romantic relationships. Mood swings; you feel happy one day and sad the next. You may feel tempted to do unhealthy or unsafe things to try to fit in with friends. ( These behaviors can be dangerous and damage your health) Dealing with the changes of adolescence can be difficult. Talking with your parents or other trusted adults can help deal with the changes you are going through.
