POETRY TERMS

Stanza: a division of poetry named for the number of lines it contains. Couplet- 2 lines Triplet- 3 lines Quatrain- 4 lines Quintet- 5 lines Sestet- 6 lines Septet- 7 lines Octave- 8 lines

Verse A metric line of poetry

Type of stress pattern: Iambic Pentameter- five feet (iambs) Unstressed followed by stressed syllables weak STRONG /weak STRONG /weak STRONG /weak STRONG /weak STRONG

Rhyme…..time! Blank verse: Poetry that is written in unrhymed iambic pentameter. Shakespeare wrote most of his plays in blank verse .Free verse: Poetry composed of either rhymed or unrhymed lines that have no set meter. Internal rhyme: Rhyme within a line Approximate or slant rhyme: a partial or imperfect rhyme. (moon/stone, pack/mat, stone/gone)

Rhyme Scheme -the pattern of rhymes in a stanza or poem Examples: -ABAB AABB ABCD ABCD Etc.

Sweet Sounds Alliteration: Repetition of the same sounds at the BEGINNING of words Assonance: The repetition of identical or similar vowel sounds in a group of words close together. (Especially in stressed syllable.) Onomatopoeia: A word such as BUZZ or MURMUR, that imitates that sound of that which it represents Refrain: A phrase, verse, or group of verses that are repeated regularly in a poem, usually at the end of each stanza
