UMR’s Environmental Management System

What is an Environmental Management System? Development of an EMS is a voluntary approach to improving UMR’s environmental performance An environmental management system (EMS) is an organized and formal approach to managing environmental issues within an organization

What is ISO 14001? ISO is a widely-accepted international standard for environmental management systems ISO requires UMR to define the environmental responsibilities of all employees, and requires top management to provide the resources necessary to ensure continual environmental improvement ISO certification audits are conducted twice a year at UMR All UMR employees are expected to be prepared for EMS audits

UMR’s Environmental Policy

The University of Missouri-Rolla (UMR) has a major responsibility to educate tomorrow’s leaders.

UMR believes that proactive environmental management is a fundamental component in educating our future leaders.

UMR is committed to the protection of human health and the environment by integrating environmental stewardship into the education, research, administration, and business activities of the university.

ensuring compliance with relevant environmental legislation and regulations, as well as with other requirements to which the university has subscribed. UMR is dedicated to an environmental management system that is focused on continually improving its impact on the environment, preventing pollution, and

UMR Environmental Objectives & Targets

Objective: Establish and maintain an environmental compliance program at UMR Target: Complete the program by 08/31/02 Environmental Compliance Program

Objective: Establish an “Environmental Management” certificate &/or degree program at UMR Target: Existing courses for the certificate program New course development for the degree program Curriculum Development Program

Objective: Update the control of ventilation through the fume hoods in Schrenk Hall to provide a safer work environment & reduce energy usage. Target: Reduce ventilation to 20,000 cfm when not in use Control fume ventilation to 100 fpm when in use Reduce energy costs by $20,000/year Energy Reduction Program

Objective: Reduce solid waste disposal costs & improve campus recycling Target: 10% cost reduction by 2003 Develop campus-wide awareness program by Spring 2003 Obtain external funding to support improved campus recycling by Spring 2003 Solid Waste Reduction Program

Objective: Develop a campus-wide incentive program for continual environmental improvement Target Areas: Environmental Compliance Laboratory Housekeeping Waste Minimization Campus Incentive Program for Continual Environmental Improvement

Objective: Prioritize support to provide outreach & assistance for EMS development & implementation Target Areas: Public Entities Colleges & Universities Rolla Community UMR Continual Improvement Outreach & Assistance Program

Objective: Develop a collaborative strategy for addressing global environmental stewardship through UMR research in energy, the environment and management systems Global Environmental Stewardship Program

EMS Operational Controls UMR has established guidelines, through the environmental management system, for the control of operations associated with our significant environmental aspects

UMR Operational Controls On-Line Environmental Health & Safety Manual

The Importance of Following EMS Guidelines The benefits: Reduce environmental liabilities Reduce waste disposal costs Reduce regulatory compliance costs for the university Enhance the public image of the university The consequences of not following guidelines: Pollution of the environment Regulatory non-compliance EMS non-conformance

Emergency Preparedness In the event of an environmental emergency: Contact University Police! Extension 4300

You Can Make Difference! 1.Be aware of the environmental impacts associated with your job 2.Fulfill your EMS responsibilities 3. Follow established EMS guidelines
