Aims of the lesson

What injuries have we had Individually write down an injury that you have had as a result of sport How did it happen Why did it happen How long did it keep you out for?

Injuries: Extrinsic and Intrinsic factors Sports injuries are caused by something either intrinsic or extrinsic what do these terms mean? Individually, pairs, 4s Intrinsic: coming from the inside- intrinsic injuries result from stress inside an individual body

What examples are there of intrinsic injuries One example could be that you keep using the same muscle over and over again. Can you think of any sports that may cause a certain muscle to become injured? What are the most common parts in the body to become injured? The most common parts of the body affected by overuse injuries are the tendons within the hip, knee, ankle, shoulder and wrist joints

What is an extrinsic Injury? Extrinsic – an extrinsic injury is something that is caused by an outside force What examples can you think off that is caused by someone or something else Individually, pair, share

Extrinsic or intrinsic Overuse injury such as shin splints Muscle strain due to a muscle imbalance Head collision going up for a header Slipping on a wet surface Falling over on a dry ski slope and cutting your knee Running into the rugby post and bruising your hip Limited flexibility resulting in a ligament sprain A shoulder muscle tear when swinging the racquet
