2 Connector Identify 3 functions of the skeletal system.
What classification of joint allows movement? What type of joint is the shoulder joint? Can you give another example? Explain the range of movement at the joint? Give a sporting example of that joint being used? What type of joint is the elbow joint?

3 Key Words Osteoporosis Fracture Open Closed Compound Dislocation
Sprain Strain Calcium Vitamin D 3

4 Big Picture You will be able to identify the effects of exercise, diet and physical activity on the skeletal system. You will be able to identify the potential injuries that can occur to the skeletal system and how initally they can be treated. 4

5 Learning Outcomes All students will be able to identify the effects of regular exercise on the skeletal system. Most students will be able to identify the potential injuries that can occur to the skeletal system. Some students will know how the potential injuries could occur and how to treat them. 5

Students draw and label a diagram of a long bone. Extension What is in the centre of bones? What is the function of the above?

7 Task 2 The Effects of Exercise And Physical Activity on BONES
Read through p157. Regular exercise has been identified to do the following; Increase bone density. Increase the strength of ligaments and tendons. With your knowledge of the structure of bones, can you explain point 1? Can you explain point 2?

8 Task 3 The Effects of Exercise And Physical Activity on BONES
Answer the following questions in full sentences; What is Osteoporosis? Who is likely to suffer from Osteoporosis? How can Osteoporosis be prevented?

9 Task 4 The Effects of DIET on BONES
With your partner can you identify the following? What components of a healthy diet are needed to maintain strong bones? Complete the table on your worksheet. Include the effects of smoking. Page 161 if you need help.

Two effects of regular exercise on the bones. The condition that is a reduction in the density of bones? Why? What can be done to prevent this? Two components of a healthy diet which are essential for healthy strong bones?

11 Task 5 Injuries to the Skeletal System
Read through page and identify the following key information. Complete the worksheet. The signs and symptoms of a fracture. Initial treatment of a fracture. Explain the 2 different types of fracture. The importance of rest. The descriptions of 6 different fractures. Complete the table for 5 different joint injuries. Identify what RICE stands for and explain when it would be used.

12 DO NOT SHOUT OUT THE ANSWER OR YOU WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE REVIEW!!!
Identify the types of bone / joint injuries being described... Stand up when you know the answer... DO NOT SHOUT OUT THE ANSWER OR YOU WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE REVIEW!!!

13 STRESS FRACTURE Review 1 This type of fracture is an overuse injury.
There are links with eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia. Normally a result of a repetitive movement where the muscles can not cope due to fatigue. STRESS FRACTURE

17 Review 5 TRANSVERSE FRACTURE

18 Review 6 IMPACTED FRACTURE

19 DISLOCATION Review 7 Often a result of a hard blow.
A sign is deformity and swelling at a joint. A bone at a joint is forced out of position. How should I be treated? DISLOCATION
