th Grade A Year to Cheer!

About Mrs. Tello This is my 10 th year at Hillside and my 23 rd year teaching. I have taught 4 th and 5 th grades. I have 2 grown daughters and 3 grandchildren. My undergraduate degree is in math and my Masters is in education.

Binder Organization We will organize the binders by subjects. Your child will file each paper, packet, or assignment into the appropriate subject area tab. You can use the materials in each section to review for tests and quizzes. Your child will bring his or her binder home every evening.

Agenda I will initial each day’s entry to make sure the assignment has been written in correctly. For the first 2 weeks, parents are encouraged to initial each entry as well. Tests and quizzes will be recorded in the last section. Agendas will be kept in students’ binders.

Thursday Folders Every Thursday graded work will be sent their Thursday – Take Home Folder. This will allow you to see the week’s graded assignments. Please sign the signature page that indicates that you have seen the contents of the Thursday folder. If a student receives a grade below a B or a 3, please go over it with your child, sign and return it to school in their Thursday Folder.

5 th Grade Curriculum SOL tests are given in reading, math, and science. All SOL tests are given in May. 9 week plans are posted on the 5 th grade webpage. Study guides are posted on the 5 th grade webpage. Study guides with answers will be posted 3-5 days before the test.

Homework Expectations Homework should be completed on a nightly basis Monday-Thursday. Students should be reading silently as part of homework. Homework is always due the next day unless noted otherwise. If a student is absent or misses class, they have the number of days missed to complete the work. If homework is not turned in when due, it must be completed the next day.

Reading Reading fiction and nonfiction selections Improve reading comprehension Reading fluency – reading with expression Reading a variety of genres Power Reading – Can each student read 25 books this school year? Social Studies SOL- none! Units of Study: 6 Regions of the United States Tests & Quizzes: study guides online Map Quizzes- states, capitals, and abbreviations Interactive Notebooks

Grading System Check plus, Check, Check minus √+ √ √- You will see these marked on class work throughout the quarter indicating a level of success. A - D You will see letter grades with a number on tests, quizzes, and on the report card.

Grading System 4 – Exceeds the standard. In addition to correctly answering most or all of the questions on the assessment, the student demonstrated “Level 4” thinking. This equates to an A in the grade book. 3 – Meets the standard. Student correctly answered most of the questions on the assignment. This will equate to a B in the grade book. 2 – Progressing toward the standard. The student was close to demonstrating proficiency with the standard. This will equate to a C in the grade book. 1 – Below Standard The student is able to demonstrate understanding with support. You will see the number 1 marked on the assignment. However, it will show up as a D or an F in the grade book.

Language Arts Writer’s Workshop – focus on the Writing Process Graphic organizers – to plan writing Types of writing –descriptive, narrative, expository, persuasive Editing and revising – major focus Spelling Quiz every Friday.

Extra information Specials P.E. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday (Mrs. Aubel) Music – Thursday and Friday (Ms. Davis) Art – Friday (Ms. Mandak) Library – Wednesday (Ms. McLean) DARE – Monday (every 2 weeks) (Dep Furusho) Guidance – Friday (every 2 weeks)(Mrs. Darnell) The classroom is peanut free at all times. Food treats to celebrate birthdays are discouraged.

Classroom Behavior Hillside’s 3 Rs Ready Respectful Responsible Students can earn stamps on a stamp chart for displaying the 3 Rs and for putting forth effort in their learning. Filled in stamp charts can be turned in for a ticket. Tickets can be redeemed for participation in special activities and for purchasing items in auctions.
