A Grant Proposal... Defines a problem –The specific community –Incidence/prevalence of the problem –Influencing factors Proposes a solution –Method, timeline, and cost details –Expected outcomes/benefits –How you will measure success

Steps Planning Look for appropriate funding Decide who is going to write it What type of clearances are needed Get application Need “letter of interest” Who is contact person & commitment letters Know review process Answer all completely SPELL CHECK Submit on time Stay in contact with grantor

Typical Grant Content Cover Letter Executive Summary Statement of Need - demographics Project Description Budget Organization Information Conclusion Appendix: References & Materials

Statement of Need Literature review Focus: Broad to local Summarize with specifically stated need

Project Description Overview Goals and Objectives Methods Staffing/Administration Evaluation Sustainability

Methods Program description –general scope –component descriptions (not materials) Implementation plan Time line/Gantt chart –activity dates/durations –marketing & evaluation dates Marketing plan Justification

Staffing/Administration List personnel (include volunteers) Describe responsibilities of each Explain how project will be administered (advisory boards? coalitions? partnerships with other agencies/organizations?)

Evaluation Plan Three Categories: –Process Evaluation –Impact Evaluation –Outcome Evaluation In each explain –What you’ll measure –How you’ll measure it –Who will measure it –When (refer reader to time line/Gantt chart) –“Why” - How info will be used

Program Sustainability Project’s capacity-building aspects How project can become self-sufficient at end of funding period

Budget Narrative Descriptions –personnel - titles/responsibilities, refer to staffing/admin section –equipment/supplies - intended use Detailed Budget Table –Personnel, equipment/facilities, consumable supplies –Requested and donated columns

Organization Information Organizational mission & history with community Scope of services/activities Demonstrate –experience! –community acceptance/trust Describe capacity to deliver

Conclusion Summarize proposal’s main points (similar to executive summary but more general & brief) Emphasize potential outcomes

OTL Print out a “grant application” for funding that would address physical activity
