Maintaining a Healthy Weight Chapter 11 Lesson 1 Pages 260-265

Objectives Identify the importance of a healthy body image. Explain how eating and physical activity affect weight. Describe ways to maintain a healthy weight.

Body Image **The way you see and feel about your body. How you feel about your body can affect your self-esteem Body changes are normal. Media tends to portray females as thin and males as muscular.

How does the media affect a person’s body image? What is the key to a positive body image and high self- esteem? (Look in your books, page 261) Optimistic attitude and healthy lifestyle

Video Clip How do the media affect body image Manipulating media images as a marketing tool Learning the difference between perception and reality

Your Appropriate Weight **Weight that is best for your body. Usually given as a range. Example: 5’5” female is between 117 and 155 pounds. Height is not the only factor that affects how much a person should weigh.

What are three other factors that need to be considered when determining someone’s appropriate weight? Gender, age, body build or frame, growth pattern

Body Mass Index **Measurement that allows you to assess your body size, taking your height and weight into account. Not 100% accurate, but it gives you an idea. Point out that BMI is not always the best way to assess yourself.

Look at the chart. If someone is 5’10 and weighs 189 pounds, which area of the chart do they fit in? What about someone who is 6’3” and weighs 312 pounds?

Weight Problems *Overweight: weighing more than what is appropriate for your gender, height, age, body frame and growth pattern Underweight: weighing less than what is appropriate for your gender, height, age, body frame and growth pattern.

Overweight Teens Generally there is a higher trend of overweight children in recent decades. What are two lifestyle factors that can lead to this problem? Extra pounds put added stress on the heart and lungs Increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, cancer & stroke

Underweight Teens Lack body fat, which insulates the body and provides energy. May also not be getting the nutrients their body needs Difficult to fight infections Risk of developing anemia What is anemia? (Page 263) Iron-red meat, egg yolks, leafy greens, dried fruit, cereals and grains, liver, artichokes, beans Anemia can occur if your red blood cells don't contain enough hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is an iron-rich protein that gives blood its red color. This protein helps red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body.

Reaching an Appropriate Weight “Energy Equation” -Balance the “Calories In” and “Calories Out” *BMR = Basal Metabolic Rate # of calories your body burns while awake but resting One pound = 3,500 calories

Beyond the Energy Equation Pay attention to the source of the calories you eat. Choose foods that are nutrient-dense

Gain, Lose, or Maintain over week? Riley is a 15 year old long distance runner who consumes 1500 calories per day. Darius is a 17 year old who takes in 3,500 calories daily and does little physical activity. George takes in 2,800 calories per day, plays baseball 3 times per week and is 14 years old.

Managing Weight in a Healthy Way People who need to lose weight should do so gradually Don’t turn to fad diets, diet pills, or extreme workouts There are NO shortcuts.

Video Clip The Weight Loss Industry and Fad Diets

Discussion ?’s What is the meaning of appropriate weight? Why is a healthy body image important? What are some healthful ways to reach an appropriate weight? What are some UNHEALTHFUL ways to manage weight? Where does the pressure to look a certain way come from? A teen takes in 2,000 calories each day and burns 2,300 calories. Over time what will happen to the teens weight? Explain why.
