How can changes to design grow out of the developmental currents already at work? What qualities does this imply? What values and spirit should things convey? What is its individual spirit? [What is its essence; its inspiration, its ‘esprit de place’; genius loci?] Time continuum? [What is ebbing and flowing and changing?] How do people feel about it? [What appeals; how do we respond?] What is its physical context? [What is its bedrock; its material substance; its physicality?]

Spirit, essence and inspiration The new library had to be designed to blend in with the existing traditional buildings or make a ‘bold new statement’.

What is valued? ICTs: lab of 30 computers; bank of enquiry terminals What is valued? How do people feel about it? ICTs: P&C provides financial support for ICT replacement program. High level of use of the computer lab by classes and the terminals for enquiries and AR quizzes. Reading: students, parents and teachers and parents support the school’s AR initiative. There has been a significant increase in borrowing and reading levels (particularly amongst boys) and the school now uses the online version.
