Background Took place in Mexico City First Olympic Games in Latin America Was selected over Detroit Torch relay followed Christopher Columbus’s route to the new world

Black-gloved fists Medal Award Ceremony for the men’s 200 meter race o Tommie Smith and John Carlos took a stand for civil rights by raising black- gloved fists o Wore black socks in lieu of shoes o Australian Peter Norman wore an America “civil rights” badge as support to them on the podium As punishment, the IOC banned Smith and Carlos from the Olympic Games for life
