NAACP- National Association for the - Advancement of Colored People - Was a multiracial organization- used courts and congress to change laws. 2. National Urban League- Helped African - Americans who moved to the Northern cities. 3. CORE- Congress of Racial Equality - Advocated change through peaceful confrontation (interracial)

9 Groups continued 4. SCLC- (Martin Luther King Jr.) - Did bus boycott in Chicago. - Nonviolent protest and Civil Disobedience 5. Black Panthers- Militant black political party. - Believed in Black Power, Black is Beautiful. - Called on African Americans to lead their own communities. 6. Nation of Islam (Malcolm X) - Believed in Black Nationalism - Were NOT nonviolent - Opposed integration

12 Civil Rights Movement III Strategies used achieve goals A. Nonviolence Methods 1. Worked to change laws (federal anti- lynching laws) 2. Sit-ins- Protesters sat themselves in segregated areas and refused to move. 3. Freedom Rides- Interracial groups traveled the south challenging segregated bus terminals.

13 Strategies continued 4. Marches- Peaceful protest at important places. Ex. “March on Washington” 200,000 people & “I have a dream speech” 5. Boycotts- Blacks boycotted segregated places to cause change. Ex. Chicago bus boycott lasted for over a year. (They won)
