Microsoft Word Modules: Summary Objective: Learning how to effectively use a word processor application Key Goals: 1.Navigating and settings 2.Using key features commonly used: school, industry 3. What is Microsoft Word and the Historical Context Definition: Word 2010 is the word processing software application that is part of Office 2010 integrated office suite of programs. Definition: An integrated software suite – individual programs that are designed and operate together in order to connect people (workers, groups, departments, etc) to information to enable a business process. Much of what we have already learned using Excel is applicable to using Word, e.g. keyboard short cuts (copy and paste, the use of document themes and styles, text formatting commands, etc. as well as the use of formulas /tables/ clipboard and images and their manipulation and arrangements, and printing commands and techniques. 1.The programs originally were designed separately but now the designs have evolved so that they are designed to work seamlessly.  The core generalized application programs under study in this class are: Excel 2010, Word 2010, Powerpoint 2010 etc. and Visual Basic programming environment.  Other programs are listed as fyi (for your information). see the table listing on page of the book. An office suite may have several combinations of programs embedded and sold as the suite ( Publisher, Visio/ Project Management Software, etc). Basic, Business edition, Professional edition, Student edition, OEM (original equipment manufacturer ) editions and so on…… 2.Generalized programs used to solve wide array of business needs. VS. niche or specialized industry-specific program applications are commonly used by subgroups or industries because of their need for enhanced performance or more powerful features that are common to the general public. Requires specialized training/ more powerful computing (may require faster CPUs or co-processor boards/ RAM / HD / due to larger file sizes/ better displays, etc.) The word “Processing “ is key word

Expectations? Discussion: List some of the features we learned in using Excel that you think should be available in Word?

Expectations? Discussion: List some of the Integrated Office Suite Software that are aware of or may have heard of. Including other prior offering (versions) of Microsoft Office Products/ Apple/ Adobe/Oracle/ IBM/Peoplesoft….. Others?

MS Word 1.Text Control Codes vs the general Text Editor 2.1 st Generation programs were very basic. Word perfect / Word1.0 etc. 3.Common Uses for Word processing application programs include: a.Notes/Writing Assignment/ Narratives - word driven usage !!!! b.Resume’ – HS Intern & College drafts c.Term Papers d.Reports i.Tables of Contents ii.Formatting iii.Footnotes and References iv.Endnotes v.Page numbering vi.Document Layout formatting and control vii.Document composition and review/ collaboration e.Document Forms (static forms (dumb) and dynamic (smart (using coding)) f.Letter mail merges with a table or database or names. Envelop Labels (address labels g.Name Badges Text Control Codes – the software that is used to manage text editing and manipulation. Word processors have a lot. Excel and Powerpoint do not contain as much and the software features that contain maybe a different subset. Remember the word processor has a different purpose and use, as well as different target user/population of users. The software has been “tailored” fitted. A form of modification or change in the software code. * - underlines words denotes some of the goals in this class that are part of Word 2010 training.
