14 21st Century Skills The term 21st century skills refers to a broad set of knowledge, skills, work habits, and character traits that are believed—by educators, school reformers, college professors, employers, and others—to be critically important to success in today’s world, particularly in collegiate programs and contemporary careers and workplaces.

15 21st Century Skills These are the 21st Century Skills: Creativity and Innovation = MAKE IT! Communication and Collaboration = SHARE IT! Research and Information Fluency = FIND IT! Critical Thinking, Problem Solving and Decision Making = SOLVE IT! Digital Citizenship = PROTECT IT! Technology Operations and Concepts = USE IT! As a teacher we are responsible for making sure that we include these 21st Century Skills in our lesson planning. These skills are important for our students success in the future.

16 Watch Above and Beyond

17 Technology Standards Not only do we need to be aware of the 21st Century Skills but we also need to know the current technology standards for ourselves and our students. There are several standards set for teachers and students that involve technology. These standards are all based or influenced by the 21st Century Skills that education reform feels is so important to our students. 18 South Dakota Technology Standards
These are the Strands for the South Dakota Technology Standards. Do you see any of the 21st Century Skills? Strand 1: Research and Digital Literacy Strand 2: Critical Thinking, Problem-Solving and Decision-Making Strand 3: Digital Citizenship Strand 4: Technology Operations and Concepts Strand 5: Creativity and Innovation Strand 6: Communication and Collaboration

19 ISTE Technology Standards for Teachers
International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) The first ISTE technology standards focused on what teachers should know about, and be able to do with technology. The new standards expand this focus to include what teachers should know and be able to do "to promote students' abilities to learn effectively and live productively in an increasingly digital world.“ The ISTE Standards for Teachers, Second Edition includes five categories, each with its own set of performance indicators: Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity, Design and develop digital-age learning experiences and assessments, Model digital-age work and learning, Promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility, and Engage in professional growth and leadership.

20 ISTE Technology Standards for Teachers
Under the category "facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity," for example, there are four performance indicators: Promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking, Engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources, Promote student reflection using collaborative tools, and Model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students. The ISTE Standards has also been referred to as the National Technology Standards

21 ISTE Technology Standards for Students
ISTE Technology Standards for Students has 6 categories Creativity and Innovation Communication and Collaboration Research and Information Fluency Critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making Digital Citizenship Technology Operations and Concepts

22 Common Core Standards Exactly What The Common Core Standards Say About Technology – Please read this article “The Common Core Standards don't just suggest novel technology use as a way to "engage students," but rather requires learners to make complex decisions about how, when, and why to use technology --something educators must do as well. In the past, tech use--whether limited or gratuitous - has been more a matter of preference or available resources than a must-do- requirement. With the Common Core, such use in now a matter of law!”

23 Teacher ReSponsibilty
As a teacher it is imperative that you include these standards in your lesson planning, keeping a checklist near you when planning is a great way to help you remember the standards and 21st Century Skills that you need to integrate into your lesson plans. Also making a yearly plan that lets you plan when you would like to cover certain standards. An example might be in April I will cover Digital Citizenship and Troubleshoot systems and applications. This plan will be your guide to help you meet every standard.
