The table establishes or records a relationship between the Y and X The dependent variable is normally “y”. Normally in an ordered pair i.e (X,Y) x y 16,384 columns 1,048,576 rows

7 7 Authored - H Rattliiff © 2013. All Rights Reserved. UME Prep Use Only. Creating a Multiple Data Series Chart Class Exercise -- Using Downtown Internet Café Example.  Open today’s exercise file from class website Internet Café’ Excel File. 11-11-2013  Adding and use of a Call-out box  Adding Comments to a worksheet (view and hide comments feature.  The Use of Data Series in Chart  Rt click on cell B10. Select Insert comments and write in “x axis data series for January”  Toggle between Hide and Show Comments by going to cell B10 and toggling between the views.  Go to book page EX 2.37 to perform exercise in book.  Select A9 through D15 as the data to graph, select insert graph  Insert graph as a “new Tab” on the worksheet, click 3 D clustered column chart as the type of graph. Result: Chart should look similar to Fig 2.40 in book.  Redraw the chart using months along the x axis of the graph

Data Series Chart Exercise - Cont’d  Continue Using Downtown Internet Café Example.  Changing or Modifying the Data Source of a Chart.  Remove the two most insignificant categories ( Merchandise and Computer) from the graph.

9 9 Authored - H Rattliiff © 2013. All Rights Reserved. UME Prep Use Only. Chart Layouts - Quick Styles  Read pages EX 2-13 – EX 2-15.  Use of Quick Styles- A named group of formatting characteristic that apply to chart objects and worksheet elements (cell and selected group of cells (e.g. an array and in adjacent cells of A1: A20 or non adjacent cells of (A1,A10,D5). )  selected as one step in the format menu  A group of color, gradient/ 2 D vs 3 D perspectives, etc.  Cell Style, Shape Style, Chart Styles, Picture Styles.

10 10 Authored - H Rattliiff © 2013. All Rights Reserved. UME Prep Use Only. Chart Themes  Pg EX2-15 of Book thru EX2-19  Use of Themes - A named set or group of formatting characteristic that apply to a worksheet and are selected as one step in the menu  Excel has many built-in-themes but you can create and save your own custom themes.  Themes apply a group of color, gradient/ 2 D vs 3 D perspectives, hypertext links (http://www.....), etc. and many coordinated aspects (things that typically go together)http://www  Custom themes may be saved in the theme gallery (filename.thmx) uses the file extension “.thmx” to identify all theme templates files as an Office theme.  “Document Themes Folder” is used as the default save as directory location

11 11 Authored - H Rattliiff © 2013. All Rights Reserved. UME Prep Use Only. Additional Chart formatting discussion /mini-exercises  Pages 2-21 Up to page 2-36 Changing Chart Locations.  Cell formatting using Heading types (heading 1, 2, 3 etc styles)

13 13 Authored - H Rattliiff © 2013. All Rights Reserved. UME Prep Use Only. Chart Type Discussion  Page EX-2.25 in book describes the basic Chart Elements  Know the basics parts of a two-dimensional chart  Excel makes it easy to chart or graph data. Charts are used to visually convey data or information in graphical form  In addition to the ones embedded in Excel as built in functions/features there are many other chart formats (polar diagram, pyramid, ripple charts, etc) R Θ 40

14 14 Authored - H Rattliiff © 2013. All Rights Reserved. UME Prep Use Only. Various Chart Types – ref page Ex2.27 in book  In most cases the data area for all of these charts types is suitable for graphing and is interchangeable with each other. Exclude the summary or totals that calculate the row items or column totals.  Pie charts  Bar chart  Column Charts  Line charts  Tables are also used as generalized form of presenting data and information but typically include the row or column subtotal amounts for display with the data.  Other are mostly industry specific:  Area charts /Doughnut charts/ XY scatter charts (data plots ) & Bubble charts are very commonly used in statistics and marketing professionals  Radar charts and surface charts are most commonly used in throughout the STEMs fields such as engineering and math  Stock charts used a lot in business professionals (stock brokers/ business journals, etc)

15 15 Authored - H Rattliiff © 2013. All Rights Reserved. UME Prep Use Only. Chart Data Series  ='2.Rawdata graphing exer. Unit32'!$A$9:$D$15  Where key elements of the Excel syntax are:  The data series chart is represented as a formula using the “=“ command  '2.Rawdata graphing exer. Unit32‘ is the worksheet for the data source.  The “!” exclamation point symbol used designate the data area selected to plot  The $ used before each row and column of a cell – so cell A10 is designated as $A$10 in the graphing formula.
