Vocab Scientific Method Classifying Matter ElementsPotpourri

A physical blend of 2 or more substances.

What is a mixture?

Substances that can be separated into simpler substances by chemical means.

What is a compound?

Anything that has mass and takes up space.

What is matter?

A quality or condition of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the substance’s composition.

What is a physical property?

In any physical change or chemical reaction, mass is neither created or destroyed.

What is the Law of Conservation of Mass?

The 4 th step of the scientific method.

What is Draw Conclusions/Retest?

An educated guess.

What is a hypothesis?

Once we complete the 5 steps of the scientific method, this is created.

What is a Scientific Law?

When you use your senses to obtain information directly.

What are observations?

A broad and extensively tested explanation of why experiments give certain results.

What is a theory?

These are also solutions.

What are homogeneous mixtures?

The simplest form of matter that can exist under normal laboratory conditions.

What is an element?

Matter that has a uniform and definite composition.

What is a substance?

A mixture that is not uniform in composition.

What is a heterogeneous mixture?

This has definite volume and indefinite shape.

What is a liquid?

Sn

What is Tin?

Hg

What is Mercury?

N, Ni, Ne

What is Nitrogen, Nickel, and Neon?

Sulfur, Silicon, Sodium

What are S, Si, Na?

Mg, Mn

What are Magnesium and Manganese?

A liquid is boiled to produce a vapor that is then condensed into a liquid.

What is distillation?

An example of a liquid-liquid mixture.

What is acetic acid? (other answers are acceptable)

The study of all substances containing carbon.

What is organic chemistry?

When one or more substances change into new substances.

What is a chemical reaction?

Any part of a system with uniform composition and properties.

What is phase?
