Two examples of career guidance activities to decrease the school drop out rate on the Koning Willem I College By: Reinoud van Uffelen Jan Jansen School has an educational task, but also a coaching responsibility. It’s the art to keep talking with the pupils.

Dutch Ministry of Education (as a result of the Lisbon agreement): attack on unqualified drop out Aim for 39 regions (‘s-Hertogenbosch is situated in region 36): every year a decrease of 10 % of unqualified drop outs (under age of 22) with schoolyear 2005 – 2006 as benchmark; so in total a decrease of 40% before forms In vocational education: in 2005 – 2006 on national level 10,2 % drop outs ( of all enrollments) at KW1C 9,8 % (910 ) in 2007 – 2008 on national level 8,6 % at KW1C 8,7 %

Measurements to decrease the drop out rate in the region Integrated approach: - forming of a communication platform between the council ‘s-Hertogenbosch, the Koning Willem I College and its most important supplying preparatory (vocational) colleges. - discussion and collaboration on common measurements to avoid drop out.

Koning Willem I College is a regional education center and offers vocational programs in: Health Careers and Human and Public Services (Nursing, Care, Media, Arts, Performance, Fashion, Design, Child Care, Sports, Entertainment, Social and Community Work, Interior Design, Hairdressing, Education) Technical and Industrial Careers (High Tech Metalectro, ICT, Logistics, Mobility, Architecture, Engineering, Construction and Building, Active and practice-oriented training) Economics and Culture (Hospitality, Finance, Banking & Insurance, International Studies, Marketing, Communication, Trade and Industry, Legal Affairs, Secretarial, Theatre) Adult Education Enrollments on the Community college: fulltime part-time (apprenticeship system)

Examples of activities based on measurements: - team continuing learning lines  to stimulate a good inflow and outflow - student succes center  to stimulate a good positioning on KW1C by providing career guidance through orientation programs, competence instruments and guidance models

Career guidance Activities offered by team continuous learning lines in cooperation with the preparatory colleges: - for ‘year two’ pupils (13-14 years old) of the preparatory colleges: an Activity day in an education program of the Koning Willem College - for ‘year three’ pupils a competence based orientation program on education and profession: ‘Einstein4All’ - for ‘year four’ pupils (15-16 years old) an acquaintance program (10 x 2 hrs) consisting of 24 vocational education programs on the secondary vocational college (as KW1C): sector orientation workpiece. Career guidance activities for potential drop outs from the Koning Willem I College (and other further education) set up by the Student Succes Center: - tailor made re-integration programs for drop outs - extra care for students with constraints or extra needs, e.g. (top)sporters - student immigrants promotion teams - Succes Class: to offer an orientation program for students with problems finding the appropriate education program

higher vocational education intermediate vocational education preparatory vocational education Primary school -for ‘year four’ pupils an acquaintance program: 10 x 2 hrs per week with a choice of 24 vocational education programs on the intermediate vocational college (as KW1C) -for ‘year three’ pupils a competence based orientation program (2 hrs per week) on education and profession possibilities with an orientation program, a competence instrument and a guidance model team continuing learning lines

‘year four’ pupils 1000 pupils from 14 preparatory colleges follow a twenty hours vocational education program of their choice. They give on their preparatory college an end presentation with evaluation based on their experiences and as top of that there is a Competition evening of the best presentations on the Koning Willem I College As well the C olleges as the C ompanies as the C ouncil are playing a role in this common career guidance construction.

Pilot for 300 pupils from 5 preparatory colleges. They follow a competence based orientation program. Based on their experiences in a program of projects at school and after visting companies they make a personal competence profile by using a digital Competence meter interviewer instrument. With the help of the mentors in a guidance model they try to make a choice for a follow up vocational eduaction program. C ommon responsability: C C C ‘year three’ pupils
