3 3 Stages of education in Greece a) The first level is for children from 5 to 12 years old. (Primary Education) This is divided in two levels: Kindergarten (5 to 6 years old) Primary School (6 to 12 years old) b) The second is for children from 13 to 18 years old. (Secondary Education) This is divided in two levels of three years each: Gymnasium (13 to 15 years old) Lyceum (16 to 18 years old)

4 4 c) The third is for boys and girls who want to continue their studies after school. (Higher Education) This is divided in: University (A.E.I.) Technical Educational Institutions (T.E.I.) d ) Vocational training institutes (I.E.K) Stages of education in Greece

5 5 Primary school The aim of the Primary school : Basic knowledge Cognitive development Socialization

6 6 Primary school Education lasts six years and includes the following grades: A, B, C, D, E, and F. Primary school

7 7 Primary school School starts at 8.10 every morning and finishes at 14.00 Children whose parents work can stay at school until 16.15 Lessons begin on September 11 and finish on June 15. We have a two weeks vacation during Christmas and another two at Easter.

8 8 All grades have 35 hours per week. Some lessons are taught by special educated teachers. These lessons are English, French, German, P.E., Computers, Music, Art, Theater. Some of these teachers also teach to another school to complete their teaching hours. Our school has 185 students and 18 teachers, ten of whom have to teach to other schools as well.

12 12 Supportive class In our school there is also a supportive class for 15 children from all grades. This is a class for children with special difficulties like dyslexia, mental problems etc. Children with these problems attend this class for some hours per week ( 5-15). Children are taught Greek and Maths in this supportive class. The aim is to help them to attend these lessons in their normal class as soon as possible. The teacher in this class is especially trained to face these problems.

13 13 Secondary education Secondary education is divided into: a compulsory first cycle (Gymnasium) Ages 13 to 15 an optional second cycle (Lyceum) Ages 16 to 18 No entrance examinations are required in either case…

15 15 The Gymnasium The gymnasium studies are three years and are divided in three grades A, B, C. In the first grade graduates of the primary school enroll without exams. The students who complete the three years receive a certificate of completion.

16 16 Types of gymnasium Sporting gymnasiums (focus on sports) Musical gymnasiums (focus on music and arts in general) Second-chance gymnasiums (aimed at adults who did not have the chance to complete the secondary education)

17 17 The lyceum The Lyceum aims at completing the purpose of education. It especially helps students:  To understand deeper social reality.  Make the correct choices regarding further studies and to become professionally established.  To shape their characters and personalities so they are able to integrate harmoniously and contribute to the social, and cultural development of their country.

18 18 Types of lyceum General Technical and vocational Musical Sporting Evening school

19 19 Higher education Universities (AEI) Technological Educational Institutions (TEI) form part of higher education just like the universities but belong to the non-university sector.

20 20 University level studies Undergraduate degree programs at universities normally last four years (eight semesters) In Veterinary Science, Dentistry, Engineering and Agricultural Studies, studies last ten semesters. In Medicine, studies last twelve semesters.

21 21 University level second stage: postgraduate studies The first level of postgraduate studies, of a duration of a minimum of four semesters, leads to the Postgraduate Diploma of Specialization This study program may be carried out and completed in a university or research institute outside Greece.

22 22 University level third stage: doctoral studies The research must be original and show advances in research and science. A doctoral thesis should be completed in three years minimum to five years maximum.
