Rocks and Soil 3 R’s Renewable or Not ? Energy Source Forms of Energy

List 2 properties of Rocks

Color, Texture, Visible Minerals, Layering

List 2 properties of Soil

Color, Texture, Ability to hold water, Ability to support plant growth

Water is one component of soil. What is another component?

Air, pieces of rock, decaying plants, decaying animals

Name the four main types of soil we learned about in class.

Sand, Clay, Silt, Loam

Describe a way that soil in Solon might be different than soil in Florida.

Different color Different types of rock particles (might contain sand instead of clay) Different types of plants can grow in it

You get a gift in a big plastic bucket. You don’t want to throw away the bucket. What else could you do with it?

Use it for a game Recycle it Use it again – store other things in it.

Name one way you can reduce the amount of garbage you make in a day.

Use both sides of paper Reuse school supplies instead of throwing them away. Recycle or reuse anything you can

Name one way to conserve electricity.

Turn off the lights when you leave a room. Turn off electronics when you’re not using them. Turn down the heat or air conditioning.

Which vehicle is likely to produce the least amount of pollution? A small electric car A minivan Semi-truck

A small electric car

You just moved into a new house and have a lot of empty cardboard boxes. You are thinking of throwing them away. What would be a better/ “greener” solution for the cardboard boxes?

Use them to store things in the basement, give them away to someone else who is moving, make a toy house to play in…

Coal

Non-renewable

Wind

Renewable

What makes a resource renewable?

It can be used again and again. It will not run out. It can be replaced quickly.

Bob has a calculator that runs on solar power. A. The solar energy is renewable B. The solar energy is non- renewable

B. The solar energy is renewable.

Why are natural gas and fossil fuels non-renewable?

They cannot be used again. They cannot be replaced quickly. They will run out.

Name two renewable resources.

Wind, Sun, Water, Geothermal

Name two non-renewable resources.

Coal, Oil, Natural Gas, Nuclear Energy

Which are the “clean” resources or the ones that do not produce harmful wastes?

Renewable Resources- Wind, Sun, Water, Geothermal

A school puts solar panels on its roof. Why is this an example of a renewable energy source?

It uses the sun which will never run out, or the sun can be used again and again, or solar power can be replenished in a short amount of time.

The principal’s car uses gas to get him to school. Why is this an example of a non-renewable energy source?

Gas is made from oil and we can’t replenish it in a short amount of time, or we will run out of oil/gas, or oil and gas can’t be used again and again

What forms of energy can you observe when you rub your hands together on a cold day?

Heat, Sound

What forms of energy can you observe during fireworks?

Sound, Light

What form of energy makes compass point north?

Magnetic

What forms of energy can be observed when you play with a remote control car?

Electrical, sound

What forms of energy can you observe by being next to a fire?

Light energy Heat energy Sound energy
