1 Which Resources Are Found in Florida?
Unit 3 Lesson 5 Which Resources Are Found in Florida?

2 Today’s Learning Goal I will identify resources found in Florida and will be able to explain the difference between and give examples of renewable and nonrenewable resources.

3 Resources You Can Rely On
Resources are materials found in nature that are used by living things. Resources that can be replaced quickly are called renewable resources. Examples of renewable resources include air (wind), water, trees, and sunlight (solar). Each of these resources are constantly renewed and recycled.

4 When You….. Brush your teeth…..…renewable resource
Use a solar powered calculator …..renewable resource Replant a tree to replace one that has been cut down……..renewable resource Hang clothes to dry outside on a clothes line…..renewable resource

5 Resources You Can Rely On
The wise use of resources is called conservation. Renewable resources must be conserved so that they are not used up. Video Clip

6 How Can You Conserve? Turn off the water when brushing your teeth or washing dishes. On cool days, open the windows to your house. Don’t take long showers, but take showers instead of baths. Turn out lights and turn off electronic items when you are not using them.

7 Nonrenewable Resources
Resources that aren’t replaced easily are called nonrenewable resources. Fossil fuels, coal, natural gas, and oil are examples of nonrenewable resources.

8 Nonrenewable Resources
Many nonrenewable resources are used faster than they are naturally replaced. Nonrenewable resources must be conserved to keep them available as long as possible. Unfortunately, most of the energy we use today usually comes from nonrenewable resources. Video Clip

9 Mining for phosphate in Hardee County, Florida.
Resources in Florida Many natural resources are found in Florida. Natural resources found in Florida include fresh air and water, minerals such as phosphate and silica, plants and animals, soil, and Florida limestone. Phosphate can be used as fertilizer. Silica is used to build solar panels. Mining for phosphate in Hardee County, Florida.

10 Keeping It Clean Pollution can harm air, water, and soil. It also can harm plants and animals. Cleanup projects make the environment healthier. Recycling is one way to conserve resources.

11 Keeping It Clean Many places are also switching to using sunlight (solar energy) because it causes very little air pollution and is easily renewed. Do you think it’s a good idea to convert to solar energy? What other CLEAN ENERGY, RENEWABLE RESOURCES would help lower pollution? Video Clip

12 REVIEW - Today’s Learning Goal
