Topic: Natural Resources PSSA: 3.5.7.A / S8. D.1.1

Objective: TLW define natural resource. TLW compare renewable and non renewable resources. TLW explain the 3 “R’s” of conservation.

MI #1: What is a Natural Resource? A natural resource is any natural material used by humans. These materials may be organic (trees, plants, animals, etc.) or inorganic (minerals, air, etc.)

MI #2: Renewable Resources A renewable resource can be replaced at the same rate at which it is consumed. Includes air, water, wildlife, soil Renewable resources can become nonrenewable if they are used too quickly.

MI #3: Nonrenewable Resources Non renewable resources form at a rate that is much slower than the rate at which they are consumed. Includes coal, oil, natural gas, minerals When they are used up, new resources will have to be found.

MI #4: What is Conservation? Conservation is the careful use and protection of natural resources.

MI #5: The 3”R’s” of Conservation Reduce the amount of resources that are being used. Reuse products instead of throwing them away. Recycle waste and scrap for use in other products.

MI #6: Protecting Resources Other aspects of conservation include… - preventing pollution - reducing energy use - prevent overhunting and poaching

So What…? Real Life Application Conservation ensures that natural resources will be available for many generations to come.
