1 Objective (SWBAT) Describe sources of energy that humans use.

2 Renewable and Non Renewable Resources!

3 Non-Renewable Resources
Non-Renewable: An energy source that is used up faster than it can be replaced. 1) Biomass Energy: Burning wood for cooking, light and heating. This was one of the first sources of energy used by early Homo Sapiens. 2) Fossil fuels: include oil, petroleum, natural gas and coal. Fossil Fuels are made of dead plants and animals. These are burned to provide energy.

4 Pros and Cons Advantages (Pros) of Nonrenewable Energy
Cost to get them is pretty inexpensive Most machines and electronics we use today run off nonrenewable resources Disadvantages (Cons) of Nonrenewable Energy Cause lots of air pollution Destroy natural resources and ecosystems Release carbon dioxide from being burnt.

5 Renewable Resources Renewable Resource: An energy source that keeps getting replaced before it can run out. Alternative Resource: Safer, cleaner and causes less harm to the environment.

6 Solar Energy An Inexhaustible Resource: Energy source that cannot be fully used up by humans A photovoltic is a device that transforms solar energy from the sun into electrical energy. Usually for houses or businesses.

7 Geothermal Energy Heat generated inside the Earth that heats water to make steam that will spin a generator. Geothermal energy is transformed in Electricity.

8 Energy from the Ocean The ocean is constantly in motion.
Power plants use tidal waves to convert kinetic energy of the water to electrical energy. Water gets trapped behind a dam to store energy (potential)

9 Wind Energy Wind is another inexhaustible resource
Wind provides kinetic energy and gets changed into electrical energy Windmills produce very little pollution but they can be very noisy, need a lot of land and sometimes birds can be killed by them.

10 Conserving Energy Fossil fuels are a valuable resource
Conserving energy is reducing the amount of energy you use. Normally this is to save fossil fuels. How can we conserve energy? Shut off the lights, turn off water, recycle, unplug electronics when not in use.

11 Note Check: 1. Explain why solar energy is considered an inexhaustible resource. 2. Describe 1 pro and 1 con of wind energy 3. What does a photovoltaic do? 4. Where is water stored to use tidal energy? 5. How are alternative resources different from fossil fuels?
