Runner Runners are general assistants behind the scenes in the film and television industry. A runner does any small jobs and basic tasks necessary to help the production run smoothly. Researcher Researchers in the media, find the information, people and places for television, radio and film productions. They might be responsible for anything from researching factual information for documentaries, to finding studio audiences and guests for entertainment shows. In some jobs they might also develop and research ideas for new programmes. Production Assistant Production assistants give practical support to the director and production team during the making of films and television programmes. They handle administrative and organisational tasks, and help the production to run smoothly and on time. Assistant director Assistant directors, known in the industry as 'ADs', support directors by organising and planning everything on a film set. Most productions use a team of assistant directors, with a 1st AD, at least one 2nd AD and possibly one or more 3rd ADs, each with different tasks. 1st ADs have the most important supporting role to the director. In this job they would do much of the planning before the start of production and manage the set during filming, leaving the director free to concentrate on the creative process. Director Directors have overall responsibility for the way films or television programmes are made. They use their creative vision, organisational skills and technical knowledge to manage the whole production process. Their main purpose is to make the creative decisions that guide the rest of the crew. Producer Producers play a key role in the film, television and video industries. Their main purpose is to deal with the practical and business side of a project, so that the director and crew can concentrate on the creative aspects. Producers manage the production process from start to finish, organising all the resources needed and often coming up with the initial idea for a project.
