Referee Program Michelle Claude  Recruits Referees  Trains Referees  Manages Referee Performance Reviews game feedback from gym coordinators, coaches, and others Provides feedback to referees Nick Claude  Assigns Refs to Games Keeps Work Records Computes Pay Ben Carniol, Nick Claude, Tim Claude, Will Miner, Quinn Mullen, Jordan Simonides  On-court ref trainers in grade 3 games.

Referee Program 100+ Referees Experience Total

Referee Program Training for refs commenced at the beginning of October and continues through Thanksgiving. Top Coaches Complaints: Lack of calls made for contact fouls, rules knowledge, “swallowing” the whistle. Top Ref Complaints: Coaches “helping” the ref make calls, uncontrolled parents, rules knowledge Feedback: Always welcome but make it “teachable” If you have concerns, you can contact Michelle Claude after the game to discuss further.

Referee Program Rule Reminders Two or more players CANNOT defend the ball or player unless they are driving to the basket in boys grade 5 and below. Refs are being instructed to call this. (below foul- line-extended) No such thing as “over the back” or “reach in.” There MUST be contact in order to have a foul called. Understand the GFHoops local rules and create a substitution flow chart for your game, particularly if you have an 8 player team. Shooting clock resets after each try for goal (3/5 seconds in the lane).

First-Year Quiz _____Player A1 has both feet on the floor behind the three-point line. A1 jumps and releases the ball on a successful try for goal and then lands inside the three point line. Three points are awarded. _____The free throws awarded due to a technical foul may be taken by two different players. _____A1 travels when his knee hits the floor while holding the ball. _____Player A1 is getting ready to take a free throw. He fakes a shot. A violation is called. _____A1 is in A’s backcourt and has dribbled for nine seconds and then passes the ball forward towards A2 in the front court. While the ball is in the air traveling from backcourt to front court, the 10 second count is reached. A violation is called.

First-Year Quiz _____A1 jumps from behind the three point and releases the ball on a successful three-point goal. Before returning to the floor, A1 crashes into a legally established defender, B1. B1 is charged with a block. _____Every player must play a minimum of two quarters. _____A game cannot start and the game must be forfeited unless a team has at least five players. _____Referees should watch the ball at all times instead of an area on the court. _____A1 makes a throw-in pass from B’s end line to A2 who is on the other end of the court. The pass is overthrown and touches no one. The referee rules it B’s ball at the original throw-in spot. _____Each game in GF Hoops consists of 4 quarters each lasting 8 minutes in duration.

Coach Tips and Best Practices You Are The Key to Our Success! Model positive behavior – both in winning & in losing Teach children the game Spread playing time – come in with rotations Manage your parents Respect referees Introduce yourself to desk refs before games Diffuse situations before they get out of hand

Coach Tips and Best Practices (cont.) Encourage and help our youth coaches  Use me as a resource throughout the season  Text or call and make sure you ID if texting All assistant coaches must be registered - only two coaches on sidelines at a time Explore internet resources for coaching/practice ideas such as: breakthroughbasketball.com Have fun!

Coaches Issues From Prior Years DONT’s Flagrant Fouls Running up the score Too many “coaches” yelling during game Harsh coaching Improper substitutions Abusive behavior from coaches to refs Coaches taunting each other DOs: 5 pass rule, no press, no 3 pointers, change player positions At most two assistants Be positive AND instructive Have a playtime game plan (beforehand) Control your players/yourself – no trash talking and unsportsmanlike conduct

Behavior Incidents Prior Years Issues  Spoke to several coaches after games  Behavior of assistant coaches deplorable in some instances  Parents and coaches battling on some issues  Harsh coaching styles addressed  Some coaches not asked back  Players suspended and ejected from league Themes  Parents thought refs weren't calling games closely enough and it was too physical  Parents thought their child was being called too frequently for fouling  Coaches/parents calling fouls out too often  Refs got intimidated – embarrassing to GF Hoops

Parent Messages – please tell them Goal: Model Positive Behavior for the kids.  This is more than basketball.  It's about teaching good sportsmanship. Zero Tolerance: for verbally abusing the refs.  They are an important part of our program.  Contact your coach or Michelle Claude...don't yell at the refs.  Yelling raises the tension in the gyms and impacts the players very negatively.  Their play tends to get more physical and emotional and it makes the situation worse. Remember: Our refs are kids.  Think - about the impact of yelling at children in a public forum

Coach Messages Same points as parents -- plus the following: You went to the Coaches meeting and know what we expect. You acknowledged Code of Conduct when you registered Zero tolerance -- This cannot happen from a coach Be a positive role model  You need to focus on positively coaching the kids, not arguing calls. Most parents spoken to acknowledged that they handled the situation poorly and were apologetic.  We had mixed results with the coaches.
