6. Rule 5 - Violations Violations:
The ball shall be awarded to the opponents for a throw-in at the place nearest to the infraction, except directly behind the backboard, unless otherwise stated in the rules

7. Rule 5 - Violations Out-of-Bounds:
A player is out-of-bounds when any part of his body is in contact with the floor, or any object other than a player above, on or outside the boundary line
The ball is out-of-bounds when it touches:
A player or any other person who is out-of-bounds
The floor or any object above, on or outside the boundary line
The backboard supports, the back of the backboards or any object above the playing court (underside, sides and top of the backboard are considered in-bounds)

8. Rule 5 - Violations Dribbling:
Begins when a player in control of the ball throws, taps, rolls, or dribbles it on the floor or deliberately throws it against the backboard and touches it again before it touches another player
Ends when the player touches the ball with both hands simultaneously or permits the ball to come to rest in one or both hands
Fumbling the ball or tapping it before control is achieved are not dribbles

9. Rule 5 - Violations Travelling:
When a player catches the ball with both feet on the floor, either foot may be the pivot foot
When a player catches the ball with one foot touching the floor, that foot becomes the pivot foot
When a player catches the ball with both feet off the floor, then lands on both feet simultaneously, either foot may be the pivot foot
When a player catches the ball with both feet off the floor, then lands on one foot, that foot becomes the pivot foot (the player may then jump and land on both feet simultaneously)

10. Rule 5 - Violations Travelling (Cont.):
To start a dribble, the pivot foot may not be lifted before the ball is released from the hand(s)
To pass or shoot for a field goal, a player may jump off a pivot foot

11. Rule 5 - Violations Travelling (Cont.):
When a player in control of the ball falls to the floor, or slides while falling to the floor, no violation has occurred
When a player lying on the floor in control of the ball sits up, no violation has occurred
When a player lying on the floor in control of the ball rolls away from an opponent, a violation has occurred
When a player lying on the floor gains control of the ball, then stands or attempts to stand, a violation has occurred

12. Rule 5 - Violations 3 Seconds:
A player may not remain in their opponents' key for more than 3 seconds while his team is in control of a live ball in the frontcourt with the game clock running
To leave the key, both feet must touch the floor outside it
Allowance should be given to a player:
Who is attempting to leave the key
When he or his teammate is in the act-of-shooting
When he starts to dribble towards the basket in an attempt to score

13. Rule 5 - Violations Closely Guarded Player:
Applies anywhere on the court
The player must be holding the ball (not dribbling)
The defender must be within one meter of the player with the ball and must be actively guarding their opponent
The player with the ball must pass, dribble or shoot the ball within 5 seconds
The official should have a visible count

14. Rule 5 - Violations 8 Seconds: The backcourt count starts when:
A player in their backcourt gains control of a live ball
On a throw-in, when the ball touches any player
That team must cause the ball to enter the frontcourt within 8 seconds (10 seconds for high school boys)

15. Rule 5 - Violations 8 Seconds (Cont.):
A team causes the ball to go into its frontcourt when:
The ball, not in control of any player, touches the front court
The ball touches any offensive player who has both feet completely in contact with their frontcourt
The ball touches any defensive player (or an official) who has any part of their body in contact with their backcourt
During a dribble the ball and both feet of the dribbler are completely in contact with the frontcourt

16. Rule 5 - Violations 8 Seconds (Cont.):
The backcourt count shall continue when the offensive team retains possession of the ball and is awarded a backcourt throw-in as a result of:
An out-of-bounds violation
An injury to an offensive player
A jump ball
A double foul
A new backcourt count is awarded when a defender commits a foul or a violation (except out-of-bounds)

17. Rule 5 - Violations 24 Seconds: The shot clock starts when:
A player gains control of a live ball (new team control)
On a throw-in, when the ball touches any player
That team must attempt a shot for field goal within 24 seconds (30 seconds for high school boys)

18. Rule 5 - Violations 24 Seconds (Cont.):
To constitute a shot for a field goal:
The ball must leave the players hand(s) before the shot clock signal sounds
The ball must touch the ring or enter the basket
The shot clock shall be reset whenever a pass strikes the ring
If the ball misses the ring but the opponents gain immediate and clear control of the ball, the signal shall be disregarded and the game shall continue

19. Rule 5 - Violations 24 Seconds (Cont.):
A new shot clock is awarded when a defender commits a foul or a violation (except out-of-bounds), or the game is stopped for a reason connected to the defensive or neither team:
If the throw-in is to take place in the backcourt, the shot clock resets to 24 seconds
If the throw-in is to take place in the frontcourt, the shot clock resets up to 14 seconds (remains as is if greater that 14 seconds is displayed at the time of the stoppage, reset to 14 seconds if less than 14 seconds is displayed at the time of the stoppage)
**18 seconds for high school boys

20. Rule 5 - Violations 24 Seconds (Cont.):
After the ball touches the ring, the shot clock shall be reset to 14 seconds in the case of an offensive rebound (always 24/30 seconds in high school games)
If when the ball is dead and the game clock stopped, there is less time on the game clock than the shot clock, the shot clock shall be switched off

21. Rule 5 - Violations 24 Seconds (Cont.):
When a try for goal is in the air, a defender commits a foul and the ball hits the ring or enters the basket:
The goal shall count (if successful)
A throw-in shall be administered out-of-bounds at the nearest spot to the infraction
The shot clock resets up to 14 seconds (remains as is if greater that 14 seconds is displayed at the time of the stoppage, reset to 14 seconds if less than 14 seconds is displayed at the time of the stoppage)
**18 seconds for high school boys
If the offended team is in the penalty, 2 free throws shall be awarded and the shot clock reset to 24 seconds

22. Rule 5 - Violations Ball Returned to the Backcourt:
A team in control of a live ball in their frontcourt may not cause the ball to be illegally returned to their backcourt
This occurs when an offensive player is the last to touch the ball in their frontcourt, and the ball is then first touched by an offensive player in their backcourt
This does not apply when new team control is established by an airborne player, who jumps from his frontcourt into his backcourt

23. Rule 5 - Violations Goaltending and Interference:
Goaltending occurs when:
During a shot for a field goal a player touches the ball while it is completely above the ring and on its downward flight or after it has touched the backboard
During a shot for a free throw a player touches the ball while in its flight to the basket before it touches the ring
Any player reaches through the basket and touches the ball

24. Rule 5 - Violations Goaltending and Interference (Cont.):
Interference occurs when:
After a shot for a field goal or the last or only free throw, a player touches the basket or the backboard while the ball is in contact with the ring
After a non-final free throw, a player touches the ball, the basket, or the backboard while there is still a possibility the ball will enter the basket
A player causes the basket to vibrate or grasps the basket in such a way the ball is prevented from or caused to enter the basket

25. Rule 5 - Violations Goaltending and Interference (Cont.):
If the violation is committed by an offensive player, no points are awarded and the ball shall be awarded to the opponents at the free-throw line extended
If the violation is committed by a defensive player, the basket shall count and the ball shall be awarded to that team on the endline
If the violation is committed by a defensive player during the last or only free throw, the basket shall count and a technical foul shall be charged against the defensive player
