BTEC Sport Unit 2 Practical Sport MTP

Aim... The aim of this unit is to develop learner knowledge of the rules, skills and techniques for one team and one individual sport through practical application.

Outcomes Be able to demonstrate a range of skills, techniques and tactics in selected sports 2. Know the rules, regulations and scoring systems of selected sports 3. Know the roles and responsibilities of officials in selected sports 4. Be able to review sports performance.

P1 and P2 This is a practical based task I provide a witness statement to say you have participated within the lessons of your chosen sport and that you have shown the required skills, techniques and tactics needed to pass the course/required criteria.

M1 and D1 Here you research and discuss the tactics you have used in the sports you have chosen. E.g. tactics for singles badminton (individual sport) – hitting to the corners, hitting to space, high clear then smash shot and tactics for football (team sport) set pieces, long ball over the top, short pass and move/give and go moves For your Merit you have to describe the tactics used (tell me about them, say how and when they are used) and for Distinction you have to describe and explain (give examples, say why they are used and to what effect they have, why do they work and how)

P3 and P4 Rules, Regulations and scoring system for your individual and team sports. You have to research this and write it up in your own words. Rules = what are abided by when playing a game e.g. in rugby no high tackling, in football not allowed to handle the ball, netball cannot throw the ball more than 1/3 of the court, in hockey you cannot tackle from behind, in cricket if your front foot oversteps the line it is a no ball Regulation = what is needed and applied to play the game e.g. ball sizes and weights, goal sizes, pitch layouts and dimensions, kit to be worn, number of players on a team, playing surface material, Scoring system = what is required to register a score/point and what is needed for victory i.e. what counts as a win

M2 Assess, using examples, the rules, regs and scoring systems of the individual and team sports you have chosen for the unit. This means you need to assess how fair, accurate and valid the rules of the sports are (that you have found in P3 and 4) and use examples in your work when doing so. E.g. The high tackle rule in rugby is enforced to ensure there are no serious injuries from tackles being made. This is a valid and fair rule as it ensures the health and safety of the people playing the game. E.g. in netball the person with the ball is only allowed to pivot (move on a point) 1 foot, they are not allowed to take 2 steps with the ball. This is a fair rule as it makes sure the ball is played and passed from the position it was received in and therefore the team in possession of the ball does not get an unfair advantage by moving any further up the court.

P5 and P6 Roles and responsibilities of the officials in your selected sports. You have to research these specific to your own 2 sports. Roles are sport specific, each sports has different officials e.g: Football – referee, goal mouth official, linesman Basketball – time keeper, scorer, lead official, trail official Cricket – non striker umpire, square leg umpire, scorer, 3 rd official, match referee Find the various roles for the officlas in your sport and explain what it is they do in their role Responsibilities are generic, they are the same but differ slightly for each sport e.g: Dress code (basketball v tennis) Knowledge of game/rules (chess v golf) Fitness (cricket v football) Behaviour/conduct (golf v ice hockey) Communication (spectators, players, other officials) Equipment needed (whistle, pen, score book, counter) Qualifications needed Use of technology Again – using the headings above and your own information, find out the responsibilities of the officials in your sport and explain them in your own words.

P7 and P8 P7 – This is the sheet you created with me from the post it notes we did in the classroom! You will/have used them to complete the basketball analysis in the hall. (Red, green, yellow or blue team) You should have filled it in with the information you were able to take from the game you watched i.e. number of 2 point baskets scored, number of fouls made, types of passes used, did the team loose possession of the ball? If so how many times? You then need to complete an analysis of the game from the information you collected – SWOT analysis S – strengths – what were the team good at? Shooting? Passing? W – weaknesses – what were the team poor at? Dribbling? O – opportunities – what things do they need to work on T – threats – what things will stop them from winning or keeping possession of the ball? You come up with your own analysis of the game from the results/information you have collected, strengths and weakness!

M3…leads on from P7 This leads on from P7… Create your own analysis sheet, by yourself, and come up with your own questions/tally’s/smiley faces/point scores/tick boxes in order to analyse a sporting performance. Include all the things like tactics used (to attack the goal), skills used (passes, shots on/off target), goals scored, fouls made, times possession was lost!

M4…leads on from P8 Explain strengths and weaknesses of the performance you have watched (individual or team sport) and justify recommendations for improvement. Here you explain the S&W you have come up with. Say why they are S/W, gives reasons for this, say what the impact will be on the performer/team/game and use examples from the analysis show understanding. You then need to justify recommendations as to what they need to improve and why (this comes from the weaknesses). For example the team needs to communicate better, in order to maintain possession of the ball and create chances to score. Also this does not allow for the opposition to easily break away to the basket if they gained possession and it allows the team to have more control of the game as they are in possession.

P9 Self analysis – you can use your own sheets you made to do a self analysis in the sport you have chosen to take part in or you can use the ones created with me using your post-its, this is a practical based assessment but involves you using the sheet to analyse your own performance. Your analysis sheet may need some tweaking in order for the questions to fit the sport you are doing Again you ID strengths and weaknesses of your performance i.e. you say what was good and what were areas that you need to improve on (your weaknesses)

M5 and D2…lead on from P9 Here you start to further analyse the Strengths and weaknesses of your own performance you came up with in P9. You should explain your S&W, say why they are S/W of your performance, give reasons for this and also show understanding by using examples to explain your point further. D2 is all about analysing your own S/W, why is it a strength and what does this compare to and how, how did it impact on the game and why was it a positive part of your performance.
