8 Learning objectives By the end of the lesson you must be able to;
Understand an introduction of the unit & assignment. Describe the needs for rules, laws and regulations Describe the difference between rules, laws and regulations.

9 RULES OF sport IN GROUPS:
Give a definition for RULE and REGULATION (CAN USE LAPTOP/TABLET) List 10 RULES for a chosen sport (EACH SPORT MUST BE DIFFERENT PER GROUP & CANNOT BE FOOTBALL) 10 MINUTES = THEN PRESENT

10 Definition of rules/regulations
“Rules and/or regulations that are publicly agreed upon sets of principles, policies, criteria, descriptions and/or conducts governing a sport or physical activity for reasons of safety, sportsmanship, equipment or facility design, and competitiveness.”

11 Rules Agreed by governing bodies, to be followed by players, coaches and officials. Rules are determined by the International Governing Body for each sport . It is the role of National Governing Bodies (NGBs) in the UK to work closely with these International Governing Bodies (IGBs) to ensure that rules are observed by of officials, clubs and performers during organised competitions.

12 ACTIVITY WHY DO WE HAVE RULES? Use Whiteboards

13 What are rules for? Rules provide an agreement of understanding to competition. In sports, rules define what is allowed or not allowed to occur during situations on and off the pitch/court. Rules govern anything from wearing kit. How to keep score during games of different levels of competition. The rules of a game apply to players, coaches and officials, and vary among different sports and age groups. Rules prevent injury They provide structure to sport and in game play. They are there to protect players, coaches and officials.

14 The need for rules To develop competition
For clear methods of victory (winning) To maintain health and safety of players To develop boundaries The game/sport would simply not work without rules.

15 Rules that should be in football
What rules would you add to football? What rules would you take from other sports? Write down your ideas to make the game better

16 Rules that you would change
Watch the video and discuss Is there GAMESMANSHIP in sport that you feel should be punished? What rule would you put in place? Click picture to watch video

17 ACTIVITY What do officials need to be able to apply the rules and perform their job efficiently Write down answers on whiteboards

18 Application of rules – actions
Stopping play Verbal/non-verbal communication with players Signs and signals Use of a whistle Use of a flag Use of technology or equipment Verbal/non-verbal communication with spectators Teacher notes (PS 7): To support this slide, show learners some video clips of the rules of sport being applied both effectively and incorrectly. Discuss with learners the correct application of the rules by the appropriate officials. Include communication to players, spectators and other officials. Repeat this for incorrect decisions. Videos to support this slide can be found on YouTube.

23 Mignolet/Larsson back pass Kerlon head run
Gamesmanship Mignolet/Larsson back pass Kerlon head run Penalty or indirect free kick

24 Offside rule Use whiteboards Explain the offside in simplest form possible to help young children to understand

25 Rules that should be introduced in football
Institute a 'Sin-Bin' for Yellow Card Infractions Simply offside rule – any part of body in line with defender is ONSIDE Make back-passes from outside of the Penalty Area completely illegal Limit the amount of defenders in their own penalty area Penalty shootouts before extra-time. Means one time must go for the win Last man rule – no double punishments - Suarez Allow additional substitution in extra time Roll in throw-ins Throw ins from behind the head – does it matter? Extra time – reduce number of players

26 Regulations in sport Pick 3 sports
How does the regulations change in each sport? Write them down Teacher notes (PS 4): Discuss each of these, highlighting their importance in the running of a sport.

27 What is regulation in sport?
Regulations – rules in sport that are controlled by an authority. International Governing Body (IGB) – creates a common set of rules and organises international competitions. National Governing Body (NGB) – organises national competitions and maintains the rules as set by the IGB. “The regulation of sport is usually done by a sport governing body for each sport, resulting in a core of relatively invariant, agreed rules.” Teacher notes (PS 3): Learners could be set a research task to look at the organisation of their selected sport. Also look at multi-sport organisations, e.g. the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the British Olympic Association (BOA).

28 Who’s in charge? National Governing body (NGB) e.g. FA International Sports Federation (ISF) e.g. FIFA These set and amend the rules of any sport. They may change the rules and regulations periodically as they look to improve the sport. What others can you think of?

29 Laws Sports law is an mixture of laws that apply to athletes and the sports they play Write down as many laws that you think apply to every sport

30 rules of a chosen sport FOR A CHOSEN SPORT (not football) CAN YOU WRITE DOWN: All the rules, regulations & laws of the sport Rules and Regulations include: court/pitch layout, playing surface, fouls and sanctions, number of players, substitution, time, facilities and equipment, safety, scoring, methods of victory Use ICT/flipchart paper

32 Regulations in sport Unit 22: Rules, Regulations & Officiating in Sport

33 Create your own sport Unit 22: Rules, Regulations & Officiating in Sport

34 It is now your turn to create a new sport/game
It is now your turn to create a new sport/game. You must have a name for the sport/game, say what playing area will be needed, what equipment will be used, how many people on a team and how the teams can score/win. Be creative but realistic! There are endless possibilities! List a minimum of five rules of a sport and then state why these rules are set. These rules must be official rules, not ones that you think might be used. (You can use any sport, although if you play a sport or enjoy watching one then that would make the research more interesting). Create a rule book You must now create a rule book to accompany your new sport/game. This must include rules relating to safety, methods of scoring, numbers in a team, conduct of players and officials, and umpiring signals/procedures. You could use the internet to get ideas on how sport rule books are written and what is included in them. You need to design a warm up that will ensure your participants are fully prepared for your sport/game. There needs to be 3 parts to the warm up – Aerobic/Cardiovascular, dynamic and static stretches and then a skill specific practice. The internet is a good source of ideas for the different sections of the warm up. Prepare to be the coach!! Make sure you understand your game fully and are able to lead the warm up section along with the sport / game itself. How you present this project is up to you. You could hand write the information, use a computer, PowerPoint, video etc.
