TEAM SOUTH AFRICA Team Demographics

TEAM SOUTH AFRICA Performances at the Games - Olympics Only 4 sports brought back medals 8 athletes medaled – rowing medal counts as one, not four 8 athletes and three relay teams reached the finals 6 athletes included in the team because of 2016 focus proved they are talented

TEAM SOUTH AFRICA Medal return 6 medals These Games were the most successful for the Olympic Team since readmission to international sport in RSA number 23 on the medal table with 3 Gold medals, number 1 in Africa.

TEAM SOUTH AFRICA Performances at the Games - Paralympics Only 3 sports (athletics, cycling, swimming) brought back medals 19 athletes won the 29 medals 12 athletes finished in the top 8 The team finished 17 th on the medal table

TEAM SOUTH AFRICA Challenges experienced Insufficient funding to support all athletes to qualify; Funding to support qualified athletes and teams – received additional funding 3 months prior to the Games; High performance centres – business entities that need to generate funds. Render services to overseas teams and athletes who compete with SA athletes; Attack on some of the athletes by one of the sports scientists;

TEAM SOUTH AFRICA Challenges experienced Selection policies Selection was challenged by athletes from Olympics – athletics, equestrian, weightlifting Paralympics – athletics, table tennis Nationality – overseas-based athletes - athletes with dual citizenship

TEAM SOUTH AFRICA Overall performance It is believed that both Teams performances at the Games were good More work needs to be done to ensure that the country does not slip in terms of Rio 2016 performances Ekhaya assisted athletes and coaches in terms of key interaction with South Africans in the UK and those that visited London during the Games.

TEAM SOUTH AFRICA Road to Rio 2016 Started supporting junior athletes in 2010; One-on-one debriefing meetings with NFs and planning for Rio 2016 already commend on 19 Sept; 42 athletes already confirmed with NFs for support: Oct 12 – Mar 13;

TEAM SOUTH AFRICA Road to Rio 2016 NFs are submitting names and 4 year plans from now till Sept 2016; NFs have also been urged to submit their long term plans – 2020/2024 athletes who are currently at junior levels; These athletes will compete at the: Youth Olympic Games ANOCA Youth Games Commonwealth Youth Games All Africa Games

TEAM SOUTH AFRICA Road to Rio 2016 Main focus will be on sports that return medals at major international events There are two new sports on the Olympic programme – Rugby 7’s and Golf Looking at a different strategy for supporting team sports

TEAM SOUTH AFRICA SASCOC Mandate in the NSRP: Talent Identification and development Athletes and Coaches Support Programmes Recognition system (national colours) Academy system Team Preparation and Delivery Geopolitical boundaries Coaches Development Setting up of Athletes, Coaches, Technical Officials and Administrators Commissions Clubs Sports Councils

TEAM SOUTH AFRICA SASCOC has engaged in the consultation process with all its member NFs and Provincial Sports Confederations to address the following: Selection Policies for the quadrennial; Re-engineering of the Provincial Academies of Sport, Academy system in the country. Challenge – duplication with SRSA on District Academies; Reapplication for Recognition Process by NFs; Setting up of the Provincial Coaching Commissions; Implementation of the Coaching Framework.

TEAM SOUTH AFRICA Needs going forward: It is estimated that R400m will be required to support athletes and coaches in the build up to Rio 2016; This will include setting up of a training base in Europe, living expenses, medical and scientific support interventions, competition and training camps, equipment, coaching and technological support; The funding will also assist in ensuring that SASCOC delivers on its mandate as contained in the NSRP; Implementation of the Bidding and Hosting Strategy
