Recall previous knowledge: What is an adjective? a)A word that means more than b) A word that describes something c) A word that means something Text your answer to SMS

Adjectives Learning objectives: Reading:To identify and recognise adjectives Writing: To use adjectives to improve sentences

Adjectives are words that add to (or describe) a noun If the police were seeking a criminal they would ask witnesses for a description to narrow down their search. If they are told that he was a short man they need not consider any tall men. Again, if they know that he was stocky they can rule out all tall, thin men. As we add words to describe the wanted man the field of search becomes smaller. He had brown hair and a very long nose. He was short, but quite stocky.

A word which describes a noun is called an adjective. The man fell into the sea. The man fell into the raging sea. The adjective ‘raging’ adds description to the sentence. Describing words can bring the story to life….. they tell you what the mood of a scene was like.

Spot the adjective The weary sun tried unsuccessfully to add some brightness to the dreary atmosphere. A skinny cat sitting on a fence woke up with an enormous stretch. A father with his son tried to cross the frantically, busy road to get to the warm, bright cafe on the other side.

In pairs, place adjectives into the following sentences: 1.The weather was _____, but _______. 2.I was face to face with a _______, 3.______ monster. 3.A ______, ______ dog barked furiously at the postman. 4.The _____ striker ________the ball past the _____ goal keeper.

In pairs, write three adjectives which may be used to describe the noun. STORY Interesting, thrilling, humorous WORK SEA WEATHER DOG HOUSE
