2 Starter activity In pairs, think about why walking, scooting or cycling to school is a good thing to do On your whiteboard draw one example of why walking, scooting or cycling to school is a good thing to do Share what you have drawn with the class

3 Why walking is a good thing to do Good for your health Good for the environment/air Safer outside school because less cars to walk around It’s Fun You can see your more of your neighbourhood You can practice road safety and crossing roads with an adult

4 Walking Bear story Listen carefully to the Walking Bear story Try and remember what happens Try and do actions for each part of the story

5 Draw a picture for part of Walking Bear’s story Take one sentence and draw a picture for that sentence Write your sentence, neatly, underneath the picture you have drawn

6 Walking Bears and our class Walking Bear will be accompanying us on the school journey to and from school

7 Walking Bears Journal The class will be using Walking Bear’s journal to write about their journeys to and from school

8 Jake’s Walking Bears journal entry ‘My mum picked me up from school at 3.30pm. As we walked home, I saw my friend Bethany walking along, and we counted the number of red cars we saw on the way home from school. We passed lots of trees with no leaves and a big park where I play sometimes. It took us about 15 minutes to walk home. Even though it was cold I enjoyed walking with my mum and Bethany.’ – by Jake, aged 6 and a half, Class 2S

9 Jake’s Walking Bears journal entry You have a copy of Jake’s journal entry – Do you think you would have enjoyed sharing the journey with Jake and Bethany? Why? – Pick out describing words, nouns and verbs from the story – Add more descriptive words to make it more interesting for the reader

10 Walking Bear colouring in sheet Colour in the Walking Bears outline sheet Think carefully about what Walking Bear should wear on his journey to school. Write a short sentence, underneath your picture, saying why walking, cycling or scooting to school is a good thing to do.

11 Plenary In pairs, think about the following: – What nice things might you see or do on the school journey if you walk, cycle or scoot to school, rather than be in the car Share what you have discussed with the class.
