What is geography? “Geography is the study of the earth and its mountains, plateaus, valleys, deserts, rivers, lakes, and oceans. It is also the study of where people and animals live on the earth, and how they interact with their environment.”

Geography & Utah People studying the geography of Utah would ask questions like: “What is Utah’s land like? Where do Utah’s people live? How does Utah’s environment help its people meet their needs for food, clothing, shelter, transportation, energy, jobs, and their need for beauty and peace of mind?”

Geography – the Stage of History History is an account of what has happened in the past. Both geographers and historians try to learn about how the features of a place affect people and events. Why did people come here? Why did they settle where they did? What happened to them once they got here? How did they help make Utah what it is today? http://www.uen.org/counties/

The Five Themes of Geography We use five themes, or topics, to organize what they know or want to learn about a place. Location Place Human-Environment Interaction Movement Regions

Longitude and Latitude Location Location shows where we are. *Exact location is a latitude and longitude (a global location) or a street address (local location). Logan’s coordinates are: 41°44′16″N 111°49′51″W *Relative locations are described by landmarks, time, direction or distance from one place to another and may associate a particular place with another. How would you describe Logan’s location to someone who has never been here before? Longitude and Latitude MLMS 875 North 200 East Logan, Utah 84321 This are the location coordinates of Utah on the map: Latitude of Utah: 39° 15' N Longitude of Utah: 111° 45' W

Location Utah The location of a place affects it’s environment in many ways. Let’s compare Utah location with another place in the world. How does location make life there similar or different than each other? Utah Peru Utah is north of the Equator, Peru is south of the equator Utah is in North America, Peru is in South America Utah is inland, Peru is on the coast etc Peru

Where is your place in the world? Describe where your home is located using exact and relative locations on your paper. Exact – Address Relative – What is nearby?

Utah’s Location in the World Let’s identify where Utah is in the world. Is Utah north or south of the equator? Is Utah east or west of the prime meridian? What continent is Utah on? Is Utah in the eastern or western part of the United States? Which states surround Utah?

Bell Activity – Aug. 27, 2013 Take out your purple study guide for chapter 1. Find the word “arid” in the vocabulary section. Then write the definition of the word. arid: being without moisture; completely dry Then complete the rest of the entry. Use the vocabulary word in a sentence you make up. Draw a picture to represent the vocabulary word. Give an example or synonym of the word. Give the opposite or antonym, or a non-example of the word. Where should your backpack be?

Does your work look something like this? word: arid My Understanding: 4 3 2 1 Definition: being without moisture; Draw a picture of it: completely dry Sentence: Synonym/Example: Antonym/Non-Example:

Does your work look something like this? word: arid My Understanding: 4 3 2 1 Definition: being without moisture; Draw a picture of it: extremely dry. Sentence: Much of Southern Utah is very arid; not much rain falls there. Synonym/Example: dry, parched; desert, Sahara Antonym/Non-Example: moist, wet; rain forest

Policies and Procedures Over the next week, we will learn about the policies and procedures of this class. We will do a few items each day and there will be a quiz (for prizes) when we finish. Pencil sharpening Tissues and hand sanitizer Website Tardies Gum, candy and drinks

Utah Counties Knowing where things happened is important in history, geography, etc. We will be learning the 29 counties of Utah over the course of this trimester. You will be tested on them at the end of the trimester. On our class website, you can play games to help you learn the counties.

Utah’s Counties Like the other states in the nation, Utah is divided into smaller segments called counties. Utah has twenty nine counties. http://www.uen.org/counties/

Utah Counties Let’s see how many counties we can name together. http://www.uen.org/counties/

Putting the Pieces Together Now we will divide into groups. Each group will receive a county puzzle. Using the lyrics (words) from the song, put the puzzle together with each person taking a turn putting the pieces in. If the bell rings before we can clean up, no one is dismissed until all the puzzles are cleaned up and checked off the list.
