 Observe the natural world  What do you see?  What can you question?  What don’t you understand about what you see?  Learn to question things… that’s where science begins!!!

 Usually written in the form of a question  Your problem must be TESTABLE!  The problem is the question you want answered by doing an experiment!

 Research allows you to find out some background information that might be necessary for designing your experiment.  You may want to look up past experiments that have been done.  Research is used to support your hypothesis!!!

 Definition: POSSIBLE ANSWER TO THE PROBLEM BASED ON PRIOR KNOWLEDGE OR RESEARCH!!!  Not an educated guess!!!  Written in the form of “If…Then… Because…”  If… = Experimental setup  Then… = What you think will happen  Because… = Why will it happen (research)  NO Personal Pronouns!!!  If 4 rose plants are given different amounts of water, then the plant given the most amount of water will grow the tallest, because water is required for a plant to grow.

 List everything you plan to use in the lab  This includes all equipment, along with any solids or liquids you are going to need.  Use a bulleted format!  200 ml water  10 g sodium chloride  400 ml beaker  Triple-beam balance  Glass stir rod  Not:  200ml water, 10 g sodium chloride, 400ml beaker, triple-beam balance, glass stir rod

 Step-by-step  Numbered list  1.  2.  3.  Specific and detailed  Someone else has to be able to follow your exact experiment!

 Controlled  You are only testing one variable  Multiple trials  Large # of individuals  Has to relate to your problem (question)

 Record in tables  Use graphs and charts  Organized  Nice and neat  Plant height over 3 weeks Plant APlant BPlant CPlant DPlant E Day 715 mm13 mm17 mm13 mm12 mm Day 1430 mm35 mm28 mm31 mm38 mm Day 2150 mm54 mm47 mm49 mm53 mm

Days of Growth Height of Plant

 Written in paragraph form  Refer to your hypothesis  Restate your hypothesis  Did you support or refute your hypothesis?  Why?  Refer to data to support or refute your hypothesis.  Discuss any errors that occurred.  NO Personal Pronouns!!!

 Written in paragraph form  Did you find an answer to your problem?  Refer back to research to support your findings.  What additional experiments could you do to improve your results or get a better answer?  More specimens  Multiple trials  Fix errors  NO Personal Pronouns!
