ERGreenman BHS

 Purpose/Introduction - Why?  Procedure - How?  Results/Observations - What did you find?  Conclusion -What does it mean?

 What is the objective or goal of the lab?  How does it relate to what you are doing in class? What background information is there about the topic of the lab?  What are the variables? ◦ Independent - what you modify/change ◦ Dependant - what you measure/observe ◦ Control - what you keep the same

 Objective: ◦ Usually given to you  What are you doing in this lab?  How are you doing it? Example Example: The purpose of the “Effect of Sunlight on Photosynthesis Rate in Coleus” lab was to demonstrate understanding of the parts of the microscope by measuring sugar production in coleus plants kept in the light and in the dark. What are you doing? How are you doing it?

 What you “predict” will happen based on fact Example: If the application of how to use the microscope is understood then the illustrations will be accurately drawn. NOT  I will be able to draw the slides well because I know how to use the microscope. What you are testing Prediction

 Also contains general (known) information and research about the topic  Use citations to support what you are saying

 Paragraph 1- purpose and objectives  Next few paragraphs: background info on the topic. Use citations here.  Next paragraph: briefly what you did and hypothesis  Last paragraph: restate purpose and objective.  All paragraphs should use 3 rd person!

 Written in 3 rd person, past tense. ◦ Example: The beaker was filled with 100.0 ml of 1.0 M sodium chloride solution.  NO LISTS!  How did you carry out the lab? ◦ Write as a narrative (paragraph)  What was your control? ◦ The trial that you compare results to ◦ Independent variable is limited or removed

 “Just the facts, ma’am.”  Data, observations, factual information from the lab  Graphs, tables, and charts should be found here  Any graph, table, chart or picture should have an associated discussion

 Interpret  Interpret your results – what do they mean?  Any needed calculations are included  Reflect  Reflect back to hypothesis ◦ Supported or rejected? Evidence?  Any mistakes?  How could the lab have been improved?

 I don’t care if you liked doing the lab or not!  Revisit your purpose or objective and see if it was supported or not supported by your data. ◦ Why or Why not?  What do your results mean? ◦ Back up with your data
