How can you do well in this course? Come to class Participation is key! Spend time outside of class on this class –Study, read the labs ahead of time, etc. –Apply what you’ve learned to other areas

Course syllabus No separate grade for the lab section You must be registered for both lecture and lab Missed labs can only be made up the week of the lab –By attending another lab section Contact me (and the other section’s instructor) to schedule this –For excused absences only Since we’re in the lab –Proper attire is required –No food and drink in open containers –We will work in groups

Required Materials Lab manual –6 th edition; earlier editions won’t work –Available in the bookstore

Grading Lab reports –Due at the beginning of lab the week after the lab is carried out Late reports lose 15%/day late –Arriving late to class = late report! –Graded for both completeness (you collected all the data in lab) as well as thoughtfulness (correct answers, through answers) –10 points per report

Grading, pt. 2 Quizzes –10 points –~3-4 questions based on the current week’s lab Entirely based on the lab manual Will likely be helpful to have filled out the term definitions for the week’s lab –~6-7 questions based on the prior week’s lab Based on what we did in lab, and what’s in the lab manual –The quizzes will start at the beginning of class, and will be timed Hint: don’t be late :)

Schedule There will be no quiz at the beginning of next week’s lab –All other labs have quizzes Field trip to Dana Point tide pools! –One day on a weekend: Saturday, May 5 from 8:30 am – 11:30 am Sunday, May 6 from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm –You’ll need to arrange your own transportation to the site –Going on the trip is worth 15 points In addition to the normal lab report No lab the last week of the semester Pictures by Marc Perkins

So, add as soon as you can!

A typical day in Bio 100 lab … Turn in your lab report –From the prior week’s lab Take the quiz Introduction to the lab Collect data as groups Clean up and check out of lab –Get a stamp on your lab report before you leave

See you next week!

Notes for the instructor: Note that scheduling information (e.g., lecture times, field trip dates / places, etc.) are likely to change frequently. Note also that you likely didn’t go the same schools I did. I have an online supplement for my lab sections (to post grades, study guides, handouts, and news), and thus tell the students about WebCT/Blackboard. If you aren’t using this, delete those slides :)
