MY ADVICE  Read your course syllabus!!! I have written it especially for you.  Take your syllabus quiz. Don’t lose these easy points!  Come to class on time.  The syllabus course schedule has important dates & reminders. (let’s take a look)

PREPARING FOR CLASS  Full version of the text is fine.  The customized version is probably less expensive.  Please note the customized text does NOT have chapter numbers

PREPARING FOR CLASS  Buy the book if you have not already OR use one on reserve in the library.  You will need a book to PREPARE for almost every class meeting!  There are NO GOOD EXCUSES for not having access to a book.

PREPARING FOR CLASS 1. Take a look at the course schedule (in syllabus) 2. Access course slides from course website. 3. Use a book to answer the questions on slides that have a question mark.

PREPARING FOR CLASS HOW TO FIND THE COURSE WEBSITE & ACCESS SLIDES COURSE WEBSITE: http://misweb.cbi.msstate.edu/ http://misweb.cbi.msstate.edu/ ***We use MISWEB (NOT mycourses)***

PREPARING FOR CLASS Sample Questions from PowerPoint Slides 1. What is a line employee? 2. What is a staff employee? 3. Which is more specific – a human resources strategy or a human resource tactic? A question mark in the bottom corner of a slide indicates you need to look up the answer in your book; I will call on you during class so be prepared!!!

PREPARING FOR CLASS My thoughts on how to be organized… 1. Get a binder. 2. Print out slides in notes page view 3. *Only1 slide per page with 4. room to take notes*

PREPARING FOR CLASS My thoughts on learning strategies… 1. Answer questions BEFORE class. 2. During class, take notes in a different COLOR.

Just a thought: Print slides in Notes View 1. Write your answers below slide in one color 2. Take notes during class in another color

MAKING THE GRADE Course Activities  4 Exams* (100 points each) = 400  Class participation = 20  Total points = 420 *Final exam will replace lowest grade if you take all 4 exams.

MAKING THE GRADE Grade Determination Scale 90 % and above = A (378 to 420 points) 80% to 89.99% = B (336 to 377 points) 70% to 79.99% = C (294 to 335 points) 60% to 69.99% = D (252 to 293 points) 0 to 59.99% = F (0 to 251 points)

MAKING THE GRADE My goal = fairness  Grades are based on your individual performance rather than effort, personality, potential, or need.  No student’s final grade will be increased for any reason other than calculation error.  Please do not ask for extra credit or a higher grade at the END of the semester.

MAKE-UP EXAMS & FINAL EXAM  My advice is to take ALL exams.  Comprehensive final exam is optional unless you have missed an exam. * Final exam time is based on MSU’s exam schedule. One is included with your syllabus: http://www.registrar.msstate.edu/Students/examschedule.html http://www.registrar.msstate.edu/Students/examschedule.html Friday, December 4th Optional Final Exam (noon)  Please complete online request  This exam will replace your lowest grade (you will not be forced to take the grade) unless you have missed an exam.

PARTICIPATION & PROFESSIONALISM  You will be given 20 points at the beginning of the semester  Participation will be evaluated each time the class meets.  Class participation & professionalism= registering for MISWEB + syllabus quiz + giving correct answers to assigned discussion questions on slides + participating in class activities + course assignment

PARTICIPATION & PROFESSIONALISM  Missing one class period may result in losing several participation points.  Each student will receive 1 “free pass” for a participation activity.  The free pass will not be reflected in your grade until the END of the semester.  Each time you miss an activity, participation question, or homework assignment, 1 point will be deducted from your grade.  Participation grades will be updated on MISWEB periodically (after each exam).

PARTICIPATION & PROFESSIONALISM HOW TO SEND AN E-MAIL

Be sure to sign your name! Put your course, section, & name in subject line

YOUR CONTACT INFO  When you register for MISWEB, please update your contact info to include an e-mail address that you use.  I will contact you with course announcements via e-mail!

ATTENDING CLASS  If you have more than 5 unexcused absences, you will lose the privilege of any bonus point opportunities.  If you have an excused absence, please complete the absence form at the end of the syllabus. Forms are also available on the course website.
