Climate and Energy planning in the City of Aarhus, Denmark Flemming Meyer Director, Flemming Meyer consulting Aps

The City of Aarhus – an intelligent energy society ( 1 ) The Danish city Aarhus is an unparalleled knowledge hub and gathering point for the wind industry, and is positioned among the world’s most energy efficient cities. The current goal in Aarhus is to become carbon-neutral, achieve security of supply and, at the same time, experience growth.

CO2 Emissions CO2 emissions City of AarhusCO2 emissions pro Citizen

The City of Aarhus – an intelligent energy society ( 2 ) As of today the district heating in Aarhus covers 95 % of the total need for heating in the city. And by 2015, 100 % of the heat production will be based on carbon-neutral biofuel and waste. As for wind power, the Aarhus area has the world’s highest concentration of wind power companies which generate no less than 87 % of the combined turnover in Denmark’s wind power industry.

8 Focus areas 1.Energy supplying 2.Integration of Wind power 3.Transport 4.Buildings 5.Citizens energy consumption 6.Buying of low energy apparatus 7.Spatial planning 8.Climate change adaptation

Integration of Wind power City of Aarhus will be a lab for integration of sustainable energy. Together with

Energy supply district heating based at waste and biomass Energy production on the roofs of the houses (solar cells) Wind mills ( 6 areas to wind mills and one outshore area)

Transport Collective transport Aarhus cycling city Intelligent transport systems

Buildings 40 % of the total CO2 emission is coming from the private houses

Citizens energy consumption To create an electronic platform to facilitate a overlook for the citizen the consequences of an energy renovation

Non fossile energi Projects  Central heeting with biomasse  Energiproduktion at the roofs of the Town (solar celles)

1.Create a Energy Innovationcenter – Navitas Park 2.Strengthening of education and research 3.Make Denmark visible as Wind Power Hub Think tank- recommendations

Education R&D Business Private / Public matchmaking – Hotel of products Research park of energy / incubators Business Park

4 - Navitas Park Navitas Park will house energy-related education, research, development and businesses in Aarhus. The vision for Navitas Park is to become an international growth center for the development of sustainable energy technology. Importantly, the 35,000-m2 construction of Navitas Park will apply and make visible sustainable energy solutions and state of the art technologies. The buildings are expected to be complete by 2014 and will house more than 2,000 students and 300 researchers and private entrepreneurs.

Plans for the city of Aarhus 1.More focus on the technology of wind mills in the training of engineers here in Aarhus 2.Development a new type of education. Engineers with a academic degree 3.Summer-school for students with focus on wind power technology 4.New types of specialist wind mill courses 5.Employment of professors of energy at Aarhus University

Climate partnerships and the new climate plan Climate Partnership is a business-driven and strategic agreement, which holds great potential for business development and is also the way to a CO2 neutral Aarhus. City of Aarhus has entered into climate partnerships with 42 companies

Climate adaptation The city must be protected from flooding Making room for controlled flooding – e.g. by establishing wetlands in the river valleys Mapping areas in danger of being flooded Establishing early warning systems in case of flood risk
