Marie Curie Schemes objectivesEST « These [Fellowships] will be targeted at higher education and research institutions, training centres and enterprises, with a view to reinforcing their training capability. The scheme will be directed at researchers in the early stages of their professional career. It will focus on the acquisition of specific scientific and technological competencies in research, as well as of complementary skills. » « work towards more co-ordinated approaches among the organisations concerned, particularly between those involved in international doctoral studies » « Encouraging junior researchers to pursue a research career »

Marie Curie Schemes EST-Implementation 1 Single and multi partner applicants applications from organisations and enterprises. Applicants request “researcher months” and provide structured research training (typically within framework of a PhD), targeted at needs of early stage researchers. Bottom up, all disciplines that are eligible under FP6 Apply to a call deadline: Evaluation and selection by the Commission with the help of independent experts. Contract between the Commission and Host.

Marie Curie Schemes EST-Implementation 2  Support paid to the host for the benefit of the fellow and towards research training, audit and management costs. Also possibilities for extra support linked to dependants, career exploration and reintegration.  Hosts promote vacancies and select the best eligible candidates from abroad.  Fellowships of between 3 and 36 months

Marie Curie Schemes EST Fellows:  Experience counts ! Can be any age with <4yrs full time research experience and without a PhD  Fellows from 3rd Countries are allowed (max 30%)  Must meet mobility rules e.g. In general, not to country of nationality, not to country where has been for +12 months in last 3yrs. Check rules carefully !  Mobility between candidate associated states is allowed.  The host must ensure that recruited fellows meet the rules.

Marie Curie Schemes EST Hosts  Public organisations and commercial enterprises  Commercial/industrial objective 15%  Single applicants from member states, associated states and International European Interest Organisations.  Multipartner applicants: At least 3 hosts in at least 3 different member or associated states, 2 must be from member or associated candidate states.  Participation of 3rd countries and International Organisations possible in multipartner applications; “ financing only if essential for objectives of the action ”

Marie Curie Schemes Evaluation Criteria 1. Scientific Quality of Project 10% (Thresh 3/5) 2. Quality of the Training activities 15% (Thresh 4/5) 3. Quality of Host 25% 4. Management and Feasibility 15% (Thresh 3/5) 5. Relevance to the objectives of Scheme/Activity 20% 6. Added Value to the Community 15% Read carefully the Work Programme !

Marie Curie Schemes EST Provisional Timetable Envisaged date of publication: 17 December 2002 Envisaged Deadlines : one open call with 2 deadlines : April 2003 (~ 60 M€) February 2004 (~ 70 M€) Further deadlines and budget are likely in Feb 2005 and 2006.

An example application A University department of “image processing” submits an application to support 3, 3 year PhD s and to provide 9 month PhD level post graduate training periods in the latest image optimisation research for 10 other early stage researchers. Under a personal tutor, training will combine a structured programme of hands on research within the research group and a series of of lectures in linked foundation subjects. In addition fellows will attend 2 courses of 5 days each on research management and presentation skills. Links will be made with other European universities providing PhD’s in this field and the opportunities will be published widely, including promotion of equal opportunities and the Marie Curie label. The application is for 198 fellow months.
