EC -DG Research Dir. D : Human Factor, Mobility and Marie Curie Actions Certain elements of this presentation are subject to revision Human Resources and Mobility Marie Curie Actions Marie Curie Research Training Networks (RTN) Initial Training Sessions for FP6 National Contact Points Brussels, 28-30 October 2002 Presentation by Bruno Schmitz, Head of Unit RTD-D3 6th Framework Programme (2002-2006) Structuring the European Research Area

EC - DG Research Directorate D : Human Factor, Mobility and Marie Curie Actions Note: certain elements of this presentation may be subject to revision Outline of the Presentation  Overall objectives of HRM  Objectives of the RTN action  Main Changes from FP5 to FP6  Typical Size and Duration  Who can participate ?  Community Financial Contribution  Best Practices / Critical Aspects  Evaluation Criteria  Calls for Proposals  Information Sources

EC - DG Research Directorate D : Human Factor, Mobility and Marie Curie Actions Note: certain elements of this presentation may be subject to revision Overall objective of Human Resources and Mobility Actions To promote international mobility and training of researchers by supporting the availability of skilled researchers and their capacity to produce, transfer and use knowledge

EC - DG Research Directorate D : Human Factor, Mobility and Marie Curie Actions Note: certain elements of this presentation may be subject to revision RTNs - Objectives of the Action  Training for and through research, inc. acquisition of complementary skills, and transfer of knowledge within high quality international research projects  Focus on the training of early stage researchers (+ transfer of knowledge from and among more experienced researchers)  Overcoming institutional and disciplinary boundaries, notably through the promotion of multidisciplinary / intersectoral projects  Help achieve a critical mass of qualified researchers, especially in areas that are highly-specialised and/or fragmented (+ cohesiveness of scientific community at pan-European level)

EC - DG Research Directorate D : Human Factor, Mobility and Marie Curie Actions Note: certain elements of this presentation may be subject to revision RTNs - Main changes from FP5 to FP6  Marie Curie is the common identification for all actions  Associated candidate countries participate on an equal basis with member states  The activity is open to researchers from outside EU and associated states (both participants and beneficiaries)  No age limit for researchers (but research experience)  No specific guidelines for budget / size (expected to be from 800.000 up to a few million Euro)  “New” budget structure and salaries/stipend are fixed

EC - DG Research Directorate D : Human Factor, Mobility and Marie Curie Actions Note: certain elements of this presentation may be subject to revision RTNs - Typical size and duration  Proposals from at least three institutions in three different countries. At least two of them should be from E U or associated candidate countries  Duration of the project is nrmally four years from the start date specified in the contract  Duration of the ‘appointment’ of the researchers from 3 to 36 months

EC - DG Research Directorate D : Human Factor, Mobility and Marie Curie Actions Note: certain elements of this presentation may be subject to revision RTNs - Who can participate ?Participants(“Hosts”)  Universities  Private/Public research institutions/centres  Private/Public enterprises, inc. SMEs (with direct interest in research and research training)  International organisations Beneficiaries (“Third Parties”) (“Third Parties”)  Early-Stage Researchers ( i.e. who have less than 4 years of research experience) ( i.e. who have less than 4 years of research experience)  More experienced researchers (i.e. who have between 4 and 10 years research experience) re. transfer of knowledge

EC - DG Research Directorate D : Human Factor, Mobility and Marie Curie Actions Note: certain elements of this presentation may be subject to revision RTNs - Community Financial Contribution Cost related to the Researchers (Minimum 65% of total budget)  fixed salary / stipend  travel allowance  mobility allowance  career development allowance  participation in networking, training and ToK activities Costs related to the Host  participation in networking, training and ToK activities  general organisation and execution of the project  Management and audit costs (up to 7%)  overheads (up to 10%)  other type of expenses like equipment's (buying / use) if...

EC - DG Research Directorate D : Human Factor, Mobility and Marie Curie Actions Note: certain elements of this presentation may be subject to revision RTNs - Best Practices / Critical Aspects  Set up a high quality research project that provides an effective platform / vehicle for training, transfer of knowledge and career development  local specialist training combined with multidisciplinary and network-wide training activities  Use all possibilities to develop networking for the benefit off all, especially the researchers being trained  Careful management (co-ordinator plus other partic.)  Extensive use of information / communication tools (web-site, portal for job opportunities)

EC - DG Research Directorate D : Human Factor, Mobility and Marie Curie Actions Note: certain elements of this presentation may be subject to revision RTNs - Evaluation Criteria  Scientific and technological merits of the collaborative research project  Quality and content of the network’s training / transfer of knowledge programme  Quality of the network partnership, organisation and management  Relevance to the objectives of the specific activity  Added value to the Community

EC - DG Research Directorate D : Human Factor, Mobility and Marie Curie Actions Note: certain elements of this presentation may be subject to revision RTNs - Calls for Proposals  First call  Publication : December 2002  Two Deadlines : March / April 2003 November 2003  Second Call (provisional dates)  Publication : June 2004  Two Deadlines : November 2004 November 2005
