19 November 20151 ITN = Initial Training Networks ITN is an FP7 Marie Curie “host-driven” action. European Commission has issued a new call (Call 3) for proposals. What could you get out of it ? Funding for : 1.PhD student level researchers [ 3 – 36 months] 2.Early Postdocs [ 3 – 24 months] 3.Senior Visiting Scientists [ short stays]

19 November 20152 AIM - improve career perspectives of researchers who are in the first 5 years of their career. Keywords Mobility & Training, Training, Training. On-the job Formal Technical, Scientific “Complementary” Direct, or indirect, involvement of Industry – considered essential. Break down barriers, and improve employability.

19 November 20153 Network ( = Collaboration ) at least 3 full partners in 3 EU Member States or Associated Countries. Ideal for PH experiments – you already are networks !!! Two types of Partners : Full Partners – research training and RECRUIT. Associated Partners – research training. “Mono-sites” are also possible, providing the organization has well-established transnational collaborations. Still need Associated Partners who contribute to the research training programme. Much easier to run. “They” like secondments.

19 November 20154 Who can be recruited ? : Early Stages Researchers [ESR’s]. ≥80% man-months !! 1 st 4 years after having obtained the degree which gives them access to Ph.D studies. Level of Ph.D students, but not required to be doing a Ph.D. No nationality restrictions ! 3-36 month appointments. “Experienced Researchers” [ERs], within 1 st 5 years of research career. 3-24 month appointments. Visiting Scientists [VS] : for transfer of knowledge and training. Short stays.

19 November 20155 Size of Proposals “Typical mono-site €1.5 M.” “Typical Multi-site €3.2 M.” CERN-coordinated proposals in Call1 : mono-site (ACEOLE) ~€3.5M [ ~42 man-years, +… ] multi-site (PARTNER) ~€5.6M [ ~72 man-years, +… ] What do they pay for ? Fellow : Living Allowance, Mobility Allowance, Career Exploratory Allowance [€2,000/fellow], Travel, Research and training expenses [€600/month]. Host Institution : Contribution to research training [€1,200/res.month], management costs [ ≤7%], and overheads [10%].

19 November 20156 Based on a JOINT Research Training Project 7 Sections : 1.List of Participants [ full and associated ] 2.Project Overview and Objectives. 3.Scientific and Technological Quality. [W=30% : T=3/5] 4.Training. [ W=30% : T=4/5] 5.Implementation. [ W=20% : T=3/5] 6.Impact. [ W=20% : T=4/5] 7.Ethical Aspects. W = Weight : T = Threshold score

19 November 20158 All European Commission Proposals [ Marie Curie/People, Capacities, Ideas, Cooperation] – CERN-EU Relations office. Kate Kahle, Svet Stavrev. The EU Relations office must be informed about submitted proposals. They have great contacts in Brussels ….. Marie Curie Proposal preparation and submission : Marie Curie Steering Group [ Chair DEP. PH representatives L. Linssen, R. Voss and U. Wiedemann] EU office and HR Department. Project Administration and Follow-up. Seamus Hegarty – HR Department. Great contacts in Brussels.

19 November 20159 The Marie Curie Steering Committee was set up in 2002 in order to prepare Marie Curie proposals for FP6. For FP7, the Marie Curie Steering Committee has the following mandate: To define the general strategy for the participation of CERN in Marie Curie Actions, with regard to identifying the most relevant actions and advising on the number, size and timing of proposals to be submitted. To collect, advise on the preparation of, and review draft Marie Curie proposals from departmental representatives, ensuring that such proposals are coherent with CERN’s strategy as defined above. To manage the recruitment and selection procedures for successful proposals, ensuring compliance with relevant FP7 guidelines and CERN internal rules. An ancillary committee (Marie Curie Selection Committee) will coordinate this activity.

19 November 201510 FP6 6 EST proposals. All mono-sites. 145 man-years. €9.4M FP7 3 CERN Coordinated proposals. ~ € 13.7 M ~210 man-years* COFUND : ~ €5M for Fellowship programme. 13 19 November 201513 Scientific and Technological Quality. [W=30% : T=3/5] S&T Objectives, including in terms of inter/multi-disciplinarity, intersectorial and/or newly emerging supra-disciplinary fields. Scientific quality of the research programme. Appropriateness of the research methodology Originality and innovative aspects of the research programme. Knowledge of the state-of-the-art. Where appropriate, plans for exploitation of the results.

19 November 201514 Training [W=30% : T=4/5] Quality of the training programme. Consistency with the research programme. Contribution and relevance of the training programme of the private sector. Complementary skills offered. Importance and timeliness of the training needs Relevance of the role of visiting researchers. Exploitation of the international network of the participants, including the private sector, for the training programme.

19 November 201515 Implementation [W=20% : T=3/5] Capacities to achieve the research training programme. Acess of Fellows to these resources. Adequacy of task distribution and schedule/ Private sector involvement. Exploitation of complementarities and synergies, and evidence of commitment. Appropriateness of the plans for the overall management. Working conditions, transparency of the recruitment process and career development in coherence with the “code”. Networking and dissemination of best practices among partners. Clarity of the plan for organizing training events (workshops, conferences, training courses).

19 November 201516 Impact [W=20% : T=4/5] Contribution of the proposed training programme to the improvement of the career prospects of the Fellows. Acquisition of skills needed in both the public and private sectors. Contribution of the training programme to the policy objective of structuring initial research training and the European level (through establishing longer term collaborations and/or lasting structured training programmes between the partner’s organisations). Contribution to the policy objective of enhancing public-private sector collaboration. Mutual recognition of the training acquired, including training periods in the private sector.

EU Projects Office17 Evaluation of a resubmitted proposal - Each proposal shall be evaluated against the 2010 Work Programme evaluation criteria (new evaluation). - The panel coordinator discloses to the experts the previous evaluation summary report at the consensus stage (after the initial evaluation). - If necessary, the experts will be required to provide a clear justification for their scores and comments should these differ markedly from those awarded to the earlier proposal. Resubmission of proposals Resubmission of proposals Resubmission of proposals or dressing as new proposals?!
