Introduction – World War I World War I began in During this time, tension was rising in the European countries because they were competing for land and power. There was a great deal of turmoil. On June 28, 1914, Franz Ferdinand, soon to be King of a powerful European country called Austria-Hungary, was assassinated by a Serbian man. As a result, Austria-Hungary declared war against Serbia, another powerful European country. The other countries throughout Europe began choosing sides, which resulted in the formation of the Allied Forces versus the Central Powers. World War I, or The Great War, involved many countries, and even eventually, included the United States. Pg 5
