The crisis and energy consumption Irina Zabelina, Ekaterina Klevakina Institute of Natural Resources, Ecology and Cryology, Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences, Russia

ADVANCING SUSTAINABILITY IN A TIME OF CRISIS 22 – 25 August 2010 OLDENBURG AND BREMEN, GERMANY Actual situation in Russia Energy losses in Russian heat systems are the biggest ones in the world; Russia takes the second place in size of oil gas losses which is about 5% of natural gas production in 2006; In 2007 Russia took the 19-th place in energy use among 128 countries (0,34 kg of oil equivalent per $1 GDP).

ADVANCING SUSTAINABILITY IN A TIME OF CRISIS 22 – 25 August 2010 OLDENBURG AND BREMEN, GERMANY Primary Energy: consumption by fuel type, 2008

ADVANCING SUSTAINABILITY IN A TIME OF CRISIS 22 – 25 August 2010 OLDENBURG AND BREMEN, GERMANY Growth rate of oil production, percentage change on previous year

ADVANCING SUSTAINABILITY IN A TIME OF CRISIS 22 – 25 August 2010 OLDENBURG AND BREMEN, GERMANY Oil Production, tonnes per capita

ADVANCING SUSTAINABILITY IN A TIME OF CRISIS 22 – 25 August 2010 OLDENBURG AND BREMEN, GERMANY Growth of energy generation, percentage change on 1990

ADVANCING SUSTAINABILITY IN A TIME OF CRISIS 22 – 25 August 2010 OLDENBURG AND BREMEN, GERMANY Electricity generation, megawatt-hours per capita

ADVANCING SUSTAINABILITY IN A TIME OF CRISIS 22 – 25 August 2010 OLDENBURG AND BREMEN, GERMANY The global negative tendencies in process of working heat and energy networks loses in heat and energy networks in process of transmission; high values of energy use in industry caused by significant wears and tears of machinery; loses of housing and communal services caused by irresponsible behavior to heat and electricity saving.

ADVANCING SUSTAINABILITY IN A TIME OF CRISIS 22 – 25 August 2010 OLDENBURG AND BREMEN, GERMANY Growth rate of GDP, percentage change on previous quarter

ADVANCING SUSTAINABILITY IN A TIME OF CRISIS 22 – 25 August 2010 OLDENBURG AND BREMEN, GERMANY The structure of GDP and contribution in environmental pressure, 2009 b) GDP c) waste generation a) air pollutant emissions

ADVANCING SUSTAINABILITY IN A TIME OF CRISIS 22 – 25 August 2010 OLDENBURG AND BREMEN, GERMANY CO 2 emissions, reflected consumption of oil, gas and coal, tonnes per capita

ADVANCING SUSTAINABILITY IN A TIME OF CRISIS 22 – 25 August 2010 OLDENBURG AND BREMEN, GERMANY Conclusions Thus, the world financial crisis has led to growth rate reducing but has not led to significant reducing of environmental pressure yet. However, many of crisis implications are not so obviously at the present time. In general, the results show what crisis is time to opportunities, which may lead to increasing of raw orientation and dependences from raw-material export, environmental degradation or, otherwise, lead to economies based on innovations.
