Time to make a change! Anna Dukhno Business Development Manager Knauf Insulation Ukraine Kyiv 28 January 2009

Are we ready to face the challenge? Global warming is today an undisputed and inconvenient truth

What we can do to meet the challenge? Raise awareness Offer the products/services that is a part of the solution Act individually

Energy consumption in EU countries About 50% of energy consumption in buildings is used for space heating Source: DG TREN (based on 2003 data)

Energy use by households Source: Institute for European Environmental Policy

Source: Ministry of Fuel and Energy, EAC analysis (based on 2004 data) Energy intensity of national economies 0.20 0.26 0.34 0.84 0.50 0.24 kg oil equivalent per USD GDP 0.26 0.23 0.43 0.89 Ukraine has an extremely energy-intensive economy: it consumes by 2.4 times more energy than world average, and by 3.1 times more than EU countries Reasons include industrial specifics as well as very inefficient use of energy (e.g. high losses during transmission and distribution) Consume not enough from the life comfort level point of view, however consume a lot from the resource consumption efficiency point of view

Where we allow losses During a heating season in Ukraine goes to the air: -through walls of existing buildings 32 million Gcal of heat; -over 33 million Gcal is lost through windows, and -about 14 million Gcal goes out through roofs Over 25% of total energy saving potential is in residential sector

Energy efficiency is the “Biggest Fuel” and the cleanest: historical impact for IEA-11 Actual energy use Savings Actual energy use Energy savings due to energy efficiency improvements ~5.5 Gt CO 2 If whole world has followed the same trend global abatement from energy efficiency gains over 30 years amount to ~15 Gt CO 2 per annum Source: International Energy Agency

So what about reducing demand through higher efficiency? Higher efficiency buildings Higher efficiency appliances and equipment Higher efficiency industrial processes Higher efficiency vehicles Transport mode-shifting & demand management Positive behavioural changes

Energy saving model for buildings Source: REUS Polska Energy saving model for buildings in Poland demonstrates that we need to form ‘energy efficient thinking’ among population

What we can do to meet the challenge? Raise awareness Offer the products/services that is a part of the solution Act individually

Source: Institute for European Environmental Policy Efficiency of energy saving measures

Source: McKinsey analysis Global cost curve for greenhouse gas abatement measures beyond “business as usual”

Why insulate? Key benefits: energy saving and cost savings on heating comfort conditions in home improvement of structure life time

Energy efficient house

What we can do to meet the challenge? Raise awareness Offer the products/services that is a part of the solution Act individually
