Value: How things 2D looks 3D

Value- How light falls on an Object ranging from dark to light Shade- adding a darker value to a colour. Tone- Adding a lighter value to a colour.

Vocab. Value Contrast-where light values are placed next to dark values to create contrast or strong differences. Value Scale-a scale that shows the gradual change in value from its lightest value, white to its darkest value black.

Chiaroscuro- Italian word meaning Light and dark

Highlights - areas on a surface that reflect the most light. In a drawing, these areas are shown by light values to create the illusion of depth. Low lights - areas on a surface that reflects little light. These areas are dark in value. Core Shadow- The Darkes shadow on the object. Cast shadows - shadows by shapes onto other surfaces. Reflected light - light “thrown” back onto a shadowed surface from an illuminated object.

Cross-hatch - overlapping parallel lines used to create value.

Hatching - making repeated parallel lines to show value or texture.

Stippling - a technique of using patterns of dots to create values and value gradation.
