1 Implications Of Infrastructure Build The Infrastructure Project is bigger than anyone thought, but now it’s understood The cost was underestimated, but we are now reconciled – see below: It’s nominally a phase one activity, but it will run into phase two Use of tracker readout and heavy work are incompatible It will clash with the experiment build, data-taking and the ISIS run schedule Minimally we have to remove the concrete ramp and build the false floor before we can do steps one and two with tracker The Oversight Committee has told us: –‘Recommend the magnetic shield wall build goes ahead without delay’ –In effect we have been given permission spend the money (about £500K, which we didn’t have before) as soon as we can, based on the assumption that we finish at end of June –This is an unambiguous instruction!

2 Implications of Infrastructure Build Schedule for false floor/concrete removal –We are already slipping, due to over-run with Linde. Already six weeks late! –Concrete removal start – 7 th March??? –Finish – 7 th April??? –Whatever we do, it will take four weeks from start –False floor – Drawing final issue – 7 th March –Installation complete – 21 st April –Tie up loose ends – 28 th April This date could set our starting point for Step One, but if we adhere to OsC request, we just carry on with the shield walls and delay further

3 Implications of Infrastructure Build Observations on the magnetic shield wall: –If we start in April, with luck we finish end June, but it might run into July –Currently we have a baseline design for North and South; most of the work is or about to be placed –We cannot re-visit specifications and designs without incurring cost and time delays –Three options for the TB to consider:

4 Implications of Infrastructure Build Option One, ‘original’ step one, just TOFs & KL: –Does not need false floor –Assumes target running by end Summer shutdown –Prefabrication of shield wall supports and plates order are underway –TOF1 & KL are installed on existing high floor –Temporary fence around area is made –Infrastructure work can be concurrent –This way, we: Eliminate clash between tracker readout and heavy civil work as no tracker Do some data-taking as early as possible Satisfy OsC demand

6 Implications Of Infrastructure Build Option Two, ‘current’ step one with tracker: – Assume false floor is in place by early May –And that targets will be ready and tested by end Summer shutdown –Ensure that as much parallel off-site shield wall build is underway; infact it has started –Assemble & commission step one –When run complete, remove VLPC cryostats, protect tracker –Then continue shield wall build –This gives us: The earliest possible date (end summer shutdown) that current step one can start We do not satisfy OsC demand and would have to re- negotiate – very uncomfortable

7 Implications of Infrastructure Build Option Three, primary focus on Wall-building: –Stick to original plan – build walls at maximum speed, with overtime/parallel working, etc. –July 4 th date still believable, but not all plates will be fitted –But that’s not so bad: At least they will have been paid for We can assemble selectively to some extent, ie, those needed just for step three and those necessary to hold mezzanine –The tracker solenoid arrives in June, so step two could start in July on the above basis –But of course we would still have to remove VLPCs before subsequent plate fitting

8 Implications of Infrastructure Build Next steps: –In mechanical terms, each option is equally difficult/easy –Would like to come away from this meeting with guidance on preferred option –Then update our detailed project plan….
