CMPB Alain Blondel 14 April 2008 1 STATUS OF MICE

CMPB Alain Blondel 14 April 2008 2  Aspirational MICE Schedule as of April 2008 Febuary-July 2008 STEP I September 2008 November 2008 to summer 2009 STEP II STEP IV Delivery of 1st FC october 2009! STEP V spring 2010 STEP VI Q4 2010 -2011 STEP III/III.1 UK PHASE I UK PHASE II

CMPB Alain Blondel 14 April 2008 3 No access target Q1 Q2 Q3 B1 Vacuum pipe Final target Test target controled PSI sol, BLM B2 Q4 Q5 Q6 Coll, CV, CH CKOV scint TOF0 Stop/coll Q7 Q8 Q9 TOF1 MICE towards STEP I Operational Installed, to be commissioned Under fabrication Missing

CMPB Alain Blondel 14 April 2008 4 Overview as of April 2008 First steps of Step I: Most efforts in beam line and infrastructure. Beam and basic infrastructure reaching completion -- Beam line magnets installed, getting powered -- Control system and DAQ operating -- Target operation has been successfully demonstrated -- First beam particles through (partial) beam line -- Radiation surveys -- Measurement of particle rates (Scintillators, Cherenkov) protons and pions. -- About 10 10 protons hit the target at each dip for BLM 8.1 at 50mV This is two orders of magnitude below the targeting assumptions for reaching 600 good muons per target dip. Remain to complete: -- cool down and operation of decay solenoid (to start on April 21) -- rebuild of targets to ensure more reliable operation (need two targets) -- completion of hall floor and magnetic shielding Completion of TOF0, TOF1 and delivery at RAL with KL end of April. ==> run full step I in June-July 2008 Mice Operation Managers (MOM) system in place, shifters system from June 2008 MICE IS A RUNNING EXPERIMENT Remaining risk on these two items

CMPB Alain Blondel 14 April 2008 5 Beam current Target dip Beam loss monitor Most of shift performed with ISIS and target both at 50/128 Hz Able to operate ISIS at 50 Hz at end of shift, and target at 50/64 Hz with beam loss visible but OK without scraping next spill 15 March 2008 Parasitic target operation demonstrated

CMPB Alain Blondel 14 April 2008 6 29 March 2008 first particles through DSA Beam line with D1 D2 powered only Target activated at 50 mV beam loss D1 set to 480 MeV/c Scan D2 and measure rate in GVA2 counter. 30 particles per spill (will improve with other magnets especially solenoid!) in 4 ms gate. D1 D2 CKOVA&B

CMPB Alain Blondel 14 April 2008 7 April 2 2008 FIRST PIONS SEEN IN MICE! The two Cherenkovs (Mississipi) situated at the end of controlled area were powered on April 2. Threshold 240 and 280 for pions respectively. 480 is well above. A few pions were seen! GVA2 scint CKOV2 PM1 CKOV2 PM2 CKOV2 PM3

CMPB Alain Blondel 14 April 2008 8 April 4 2008 MICE DAQ running First data analysis with DAQ recorded data: GVA2-GVA1 time-of-flight allows observation of pion peak…

CMPB Alain Blondel 14 April 2008 9 Proton rates The 7-30 protons/dip observed correspond to 0.5-2 10 10 protons intersecting the target The MICE assumed muon rate is 600 per target dip (one per second) This corresponds to 1.7 10 12 protons intersecting the target during the 1ms The old HEP target was dipping 1-2ms (at 7ms in the spill i.e. ~600MeV protons) At 50Hz and the Beam Loss Monitor max. was 0.2 Volts (sources, Dean Adams, Rob Edgecock) Our target is dipping for an effective duration of about 2 ms so we should be able to recover a factor 100 without activating ISIS more than the old target. How do we go about this?

CMPB Alain Blondel 14 April 2008 10 Spectrometer solenoids I II Delay due to cold mass support issue will arrive at RAL Aug 08/ Oct 08

CMPB Alain Blondel 14 April 2008 11 TRACKER Sci-fi tracker with 5 stations of 3 views of 350 microns diam. fibers Tracker construction complete Superb quality of construction (1/5000 channels dead) Test on cosmics at RAL Install August 2008 for step II

CMPB Alain Blondel 14 April 2008 12 Spool piece and step III.1 absorbers Spool piece principle above (Nichols, Perrin) Access slit 4 by 52 cm. Allows plastic, Al, Cu, or LiH absorber. Marco Apollonio

CMPB Alain Blondel 14 April 2008 13 Sandwich calorimeter Collaboration: FNAL, scintillator, fibers Trieste mechanical assembly, PMTs UNIGE PMTs electronics Funding bid prepared at UNIGE, according to “Sandstroem design” Need a more detailed note of the project !!! Many questions open: support, noise, readout scheme etc… Expect this device in MICE in first half of 2009

CMPB Alain Blondel 14 April 2008 14 RF R&D – 201 MHz Cavity Design The 201 MHz Cavity – 19 MV/m Gradient Achieved (Design – 16MV/m) In low (few hundred G) B field. Still no breakdown. Limited by available power

CMPB Alain Blondel 14 April 2008 15 MICE RF Cavity in Magnetic Field 201 MHz cavity now moved as close as possible to 5T solenoid Can obtain  1.5T on window Coupling coil expected end 2008 for >2T measurements

CMPB Alain Blondel 14 April 2008 17 Conclusions - Status Step I of MICE has started! -So far we have been running the MICE target in mode consistent with parasitic running. -Both dipoles have been powered and particles observed, incl. some pions. - Rate of protons intersecting the target estimated. Value consistent with expected, but >= two orders of magnitude missing for MICE final operation. -Need to successfully operate the second target, install TOF0 and TOF1 and KL and to complete the false floor and iron shield in order to complete stage 1 ==> June-July 2008. 17

CMPB Alain Blondel 14 April 2008 18 Conclusions-II -Step II should occur in the September-October run after the spectrometer magnet arrives (August). -Steps III, III.1 should occur late 2008 or early 2009. -Coupling coils (Harbin China, LBNL) and RF cavities (LBNL) construction schedule: first Coupling coil in spting 2009, first RFCC module Q4 2009 (step V) and second one a few months later (STEPVI) -Focus pair order has been agreed, first magnet delivery expected in October 2009 (step IV) second spring 2010 (step V). Third module still in the air. SCHEDULE-DEFINING ITEM. 18

CMPB Alain Blondel 14 April 2008 19  Aspirational MICE Schedule as of April 2008 Febuary-July 2008 STEP I September 2008 November 2008 to summer 2009 STEP II STEP IV Delivery of 1st FC october 2009! STEP V spring 2010 STEP VI Q4 2010 -2011 STEP III/III.1 UK PHASE I UK PHASE II
